I. ESSAY. Read the statements carefully and answer what is being asked in the statements in the
light of Understamding the Self. (10 points each, total of 40 points)
1. What are the components of the self and how does each components develop? Explain your
answer.
___The components of self-concept are identity, body image, self-esteem, and role performance.
The family, peer group, and community in forming the personal identity.Body image, the attitude
about one’s physical attributes and characteristics, appearance, and performance changes as the
body changes over time. The way one perceives the body is affected by personal identity and
self-esteem. Self-esteem is associated with locus of control. People with an internal locus of
control perceive that they affect their own destiny, as opposed to people with an external locus of
control, who perceive that others affect their destiny.Role performance is connected to what your
identity or gender role in their surroundings

2. Enumerate and explain the nature and/or characteristics of the self in your own words.
____The concept of_identity relates to a person’s perception of what sets them apart from others.
Gender, ethnicity, family status, occupation, and responsibilities are all listed. Body image refers
to how one’s physical traits, appearance, and performance vary over time, as well as how one
feels about them. The judgment of one’s own performance in comparison to one’s own ideal is
known as self-esteem. The self-ideal is built on personal rules and expectations. Finally, societal,
cultural, and familial standards determine a set of acceptable actions. People express their self-
identity through their roles

3. How does the concept of self being described in the light of Buddhism, Hinduism and
Confucianism?
_____In the HINDUISM the self is the first principle of the true self of an individual beyond
identification with phenoma the essence of individual. The self is a just part of larger whole the
Brahman which encompasses of everything. The self is tied to everything.In BUDDHISM it
major point of difference is it does not believe in soul, it is called anatta doctrine further
buddhist posit the reality of dukkha or suffering or impermanence I the truth about existence.IN
CONFUCIANISM identifies in personality as a product of one’s upbringing and environment. In
this doctrine it is believe that every person is born with four beginning which lead to the
formation of the self.
4. Explain the interaction of the “I” and the “ME” according to George Herbert Mead.
_____The’me’ and the’I’ share a dialectic relationship, similar to a system of checks and
balances. The sociocultural controller of one’s own self is the’me.’ The’me’ is what prevents a
person from disobeying cultural rules or restrictions. The ‘I’ allows an individual to express
creativity and individualism while also knowing when to bend and stretch social interaction
rules. The words “I” and “me” make up the self.
