THE NERVOUS

SYSTEM
The Nervous System
• The nervous system is a complex
collection of nerves and specialized
cells known as neurons that transmit
signals between different parts of the
body.
The Neuron
• The neuron is the basic working unit
of the brain, a specialized cell
designed to transmit information to
other nerve cells, muscle, or gland
cells
The Synapse
• a synapse is a structure that permits a
neuron or nerve cell to pass an
electrical or chemical signal to
another neuron or to the target
effector cell.
Organization of the Nervous
System
• While the nervous system functions
to integrate all bodily processes, the
individual parts of nervous system are
themselves integrate and interrelated.
Nervous System
Nervous system consist of two major
parts:
• The Central Nervous System
• The Peripheral Nervous System
• The cerebral cortex is the thin layer of
the brain that covers the outer portion
(1.5mm to 5mm) of the cerebrum.
• The corpus callosum is a thick band of
nerve fibers that divides the cerebral cortex
lobes into left and right hemispheres.
• The thalamus is a small structure within
the brain located just above the brain stem
between the cerebral cortex and the
midbrain and has extensive nerve
connections to both
• The hypothalamus is a small region of the
brain. It's located at the base of the brain,
near the pituitary gland.
• The medulla oblongata or
simply medulla is a long stem-like
structure which makes up part of the
brainstem.
• The cerebellum receives information from
the sensory systems, the spinal cord, and
other parts of the brain and then regulates
motor movements
