INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY 7

1. According to United Nations Environment, with its close connections to the

environment and climate itself, tourism is considered to be a vulnerable and highly climate-
sensitive economic sector, similar to agriculture, insurance, energy, and transportation. At
the same time, tourism is a contributor to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, including
emissions from transport, accommodation and activities. Mitigation can be achieved by
reducing energy use, for instance through changing travel behaviour, by improving energy
efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energy, carbon offsetting strategies, sustainable
destination planning and management, tour operators’ choice of destinations and
packaging of travel products, as well as other changes in business practices. List down what
are the efforts that must be done by the tourism industry to prevent climate change. Cite
an example to support your answer.

The tourism industry must promote programs in protecting the environment and to prevent
climate change like tree planting, perform the 3 R’s, and eco-friendly tourism. "Eco-friendly
tourism is all about traveling in a responsible and purposeful way— to influence global,
positive change for the individual, the broader community, and the earth as a whole,"
according to Glamping Hub (2021).

2. List down at least Eco friendly tourism and hospitality establishment operating in
the Philippines and share what are their current practices to contribute to the tourism
mitigation.

southern edge of Bohol’s Panglao Island, Amorita is a tranquil seaside retreat that

3. Why tourism industry directly contributed to the climate change?

The carbon footprint of the tourism industry contributed to climate change. Carbon footprint
is the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the
consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person, group. Greenhouse gases are gases that
help to keep heat in the earth's atmosphere. While this occurs naturally, human activity
contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Our environmental impact is also measured in
terms of greenhouse gas emissions.
