PROGRAM
OVERVIEW
Supply Chain Management (SCM) is the management of information, processes, capacity, service performance
and funds from the earliest supplier to the ultimate customer. SCM encompasses a range of activities from
sourcing physical materials and human inputs from vendors to understanding and delivering the customers’
needs, and all intervening operations that are to be executed between them, to accomplish these goals. A
manager’s role in SCM involves the understanding of firm’s strategy and accordingly design the supply chain,
including make or buy decisions, capacity decisions, supplier relationship decisions and the like.

With block chain, robotics, internet of things, big data and machine learning making inroads into SCM, the role of
supply chain managers has become more challenging and exciting than before. Machine learning and big data
analytics can help managers analyze trends, spot anomalies and derive predictive insights for supply chain
operations using massive datasets. With the help of case studies from industries that have implemented these
tools, such as Walmart, IBM, Coda Coffee, Beefchain, this course highlights challenges and opportunities in SCM
and how those learnings can be adapted to the Indian context in various industries.

Managers ought to take a holistic picture of these advancements and not leave the end-decisions to an algorithm
or machine or the data scientist. This course will equip you with the skills and perspectives to see beyond the
clutter and identify and implement the right tools for the problems you face, and liaise with technological experts,
from a managerial perspective.

CASE
STUDIES

1) Sattva e-Tech Contracts

The case covers contract selection issues in a manufacturing firm, towards procurement of a key component. It
involves detailed comparative analysis of long-term wholesale contract, options-based contract and buyback
contract with spreadsheet modelling and statistics.

2) Vasant Fresh Foods

Vasant Fresh Foods case study deals with an important issue of food wastage in a supply chain that handle
products that are perishable (like vegetables). Vasant Farm Fresh is creating a supply chain in Ahmedabad, India,
to integrate farmers with retailers and provide fresh produce to customers. To design the supply chain, Vasant
Farm Fresh must identify the optimal procurement quantity for fresh produce, build collection centres at specific
locations, know the produce attributes and other variables influencing demand and finally reduce food wastage.

3) E-Choupal
This case examines in detail the initiatives taken by ITC Ltd, to utilize the potential of information technology for
improving the performance of its agricultural commodities export business in the early 21st century. The case
covers in detail how the company designed and executed the e-Choupal project in the country’s rural areas, and
inspires business strategy in several other sectors.

4) Mumbai Dabbawallas
How can a poorly educated, decentralized workforce perform so beautifully in an environment that can charitably
be described as unpredictable and challenging? The answers hold lessons not only for companies seeking to
expand in emerging markets but also for all developed-economy enterprises across sectors.

5) Coda Coffee
This case focuses on how Industry 4.0 (machine vision, AI, blockchain and IoT) can be applied to improve supply
chain transparency and speed payment to financially underprivileged suppliers and aid sustainability.
