I. If there is a Past Tense in the Main Clause, it must be followed by a Past Tense in the
Subordinate Clause.
II. A Present Tense in the Principal Clause may be followed by any tense required by the sense
in the Subordinate Clause.
III. A Future Tense in the Principal Clause may be followed by any tense required by the sense
in the Subordinate Clause.
!!Teoretic se poate folosi orice timp cerut de sens, cu exceptia propozitii temporale
sau conditionale, care nu pot include un verb la viitor. Situatiile cel mai des intâlnite sunt
urmatoarele:
a. Future – actiune simultana – Present
e.g. I will read this book when I have time. (Voi citi aceasta carte când voi avea
timp.)
e.g. I will have finished studying when you come home. (Voi fi terminat de
studiat când vei veni tu acasa.)
a. Future – actiune anterioara – Present Perfect
e.g I will go to England after I have received a visa. (Voi merge in Anglia dupa ce
voi obtine viza.)
Special rules:
III) If the comparison is expressed by as well as instead of than, the same rule holds
good. Any tense may be followed by any tense, according to the sense intended by the
speaker.
e.g. She likes me as well as she liked him.
She liked me as well as she likes him.
IV) When the Subordinate Clause is introduced by a Conjunction of Purpose, the
following two rules must be observed
a. if the Verb in the Principal Clause is in the Present or Future Tense, the Verb in
the Subordinate Clause must be expressed by may ( Present Tense ).
b. If the Verb in the Principal Clause is in the past tense, the Verb in the Subordinate
Clause must be expressed by ' might' ( Past Tense ).
e.g. He worked hard that he might succeed.
He was working hard that he might succeed.
He had worked hard that he might succeed.
c. If the Conjunction introducing the Subordinate the Subordinate Clause is lest, the
Verb in the Subordinate Clause is always should, whatever may be tense of the
Verb in the Principal Clause:
1. Provide the correct form of the verbs in brackets (Present Simple sau Present
Perfect Simple).
2. Supply the correct tense, according to Sequence of Tenses rules (Past Tense Simple
sau Continuous)
3. Supply the correct tense, according to Sequence of Tenses rules (Past Perfect Simple
sau Continuous)
4. Put the verbs in brackets in the correct tense (bear in mind the exceptions)
5. Era foarte suparat ca isi pierduse dictionarul si nu era sigur ca va gasi unul nou in
librarii.
