PROBLEM SET 11
1. The catalyzed irreversible liquid phase reaction AB is carried out adiabatically in a CSTR.
The rxn is an elementary reaction. The feed, which is equimolar in a solvent (which contains
the catalyst) and A, enters the reactor at a total volumetric flow rate of 10 L/min with the
concentration of A being 4 mole/L. The feed entering temperature is 300 K.
a. Determine Tout. (Ans= 380 K)
b. What is the CSTR volume necessary to achieve 80% conversion? (Ans=393 L)
Data:
ΔHrxn (300 K)=-3300 cal/mol
CpA=15 cal/mol ⁰C
CpB=15 cal/mol ⁰C
CpS=18 cal/mol ⁰C
k=0.0005 L/mol min (at 300K)
Ea=15000 cal/mol
R=1.98 cal/mol K

2. You are designing a reactor for a liquid-phase process in which an inlet stream of 100
mol/min of pure reactant A (CAo = 20 mol/l) is to be converted to product B in an irreversible
elementary reaction: A →B.

a. What size PFR is necessary to achieve 60% conversion if the reactor is operated isothermally
at 500 K? (Ans= 9.165 L)

b. Your customer decides that they would rather use an adiabatic CSTR than the isothermal
PFR from part a. If the target is still 60% conversion, what size CSTR is needed if the reactor
feed is held at 500 K? (Ans= 2.64 L)
Data:
k(T=500K)=0.5 min-1
Ea=65 kJ/mol
ΔHrxn (500K) = -10 kJ/mol
Cp,A = Cp,B = 60 J/(molK).

3. You are conducting the liquid phase reaction A  B in a CSTR operating at steady state.

  7500 
 rA  kC A k  2.4 x1011 exp  1/ min
 T 
The stream you are working enters the CSTR at a molar flow rate of 5 mole/min, a
volumetric flow rate of 10 L/min and temperature of 20ºC.
a. Determine Tout. (Ans= 47.4 ⁰C)
b. Determine the size of the reactor needed to react 90% of the A (Ans=5.5 L)
Data:
Hr (25 C) = -20 000 cal/mol
CpA = 20 cal/mole C
CpB = 15 cal/mole C
UA = 3200 cal/min C
The reactor coil temperature =20C
