Vector and Raster Graphics

There are two main categories of graphic images: bitmap and vector.

Bitmap Graphics
Bitmap Graphics also referred to as Raster Graphics made up of different
colored pixels appears as an image. The color information about the image
is stored in individual Small Squares (pixels) within a grid. Raster images
are edited at the pixel level. The colors of any one pixel of raster image
can be changed individually. The Raster graphics are compatible with such
raster based software as Adobe Photoshop or Corel photo paint.

Figure 1.1 shows a raster image at its actual size.

Figure 1.1

Figure 1.2 shows the same image magnified. The red marked area shows
the individual pixels of the image. As the figure illustrates, each pixel has
an assigned color. Bitmap images are not easily scalable. They are used
for photorealistic.

Figure 1.2

WWW.ICSA.US 4
INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ADMINISTRATION

Vector Graphics
Vector Graphics are mathematically-based made up of shapes. These
shapes are defined by points along their edges that control the direction
and bend of the shape. Vector-based image are independent of one
another. Each object can be edited and scaled individually without
distortion and lose of any single detail. The vector graphics are compatible
with such vector based software as Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator.

Figure 2.1 shows a vector image. A vector image records the point on
the lines, their angles and what color they are filled with, which is usually
much less data than a raster image. You can scale a vector as many as
you want but it will maintain the same quality and sharpness. Vector-
based images are good for illustration and can be scaled without
distortion, but are not as good for photorealistic.
