Good day, Sir. Good day, everyone.

I am July Louie Carba and I’m going to discuss about

Aboitiz Power Plant in Luzon which focuses on its hydro thermal and geo thermal power plants.
Let’s first talk about the Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant which is under SNAP, a joint
venture of SN Power of Norway and AboitizPower. The Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant is one
of the largest hydro facilities in Luzon, with a maximum output of 388 megawatts (MW). It
draws water from the Magat river through the multi-purpose Magat dam. The construction of the
dam started in 1975 and was completed in 1982. It is a multi-purpose dam which is used
primarily for irrigating about 85,000 hectares (210,000 acres) of agricultural lands, flood control,
and power generation through the Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant.
It is a four-unit powerhouse with an installed capacity of 360 megawatts. It is designed to
accommodate two more units that will allow it to generate up to 540 megawatts. This plant is a
peaking power plant which means that it only operates when there is a high demand for
electricity in the Luzon power grid.
Here are the specifications and features of the Magat Hydroelectric Power plant.
Generally, large hydroelectric power plants use the stored energy of water in reservoirs and
allow its flow to drive hydraulic turbines. Through an intake, water in the reservoir enters a
hydroelectric power plant. The water flows through a penstock which channels the water to the
turbine. The turbine is a mechanical device that converts water’s kinetic energy into mechanical
energy, which in turn drives the generator. The generator is a rotating machine that converts
mechanical energy into electrical energy.
To understand how hydroelectric power plants work, here is a system diagram.
Did you know that hydroelectric and coal-fired power plants produce electricity in a similar way.
In both cases a power source is used to turn a propeller-like piece called a turbine. Hence, it is
safe to assume that the Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant applies the same system.
The theory is to build a dam on a large river that has a large drop in. The dam stores lots of water
behind it in the reservoir. Near the bottom of the dam wall there is the water intake. Gravity
causes it to fall through the penstock inside the dam. At the end of the penstock there is a turbine
propellor, which is turned by the moving water. The shaft from the turbine goes up into the
generator, which produces the power. Power lines are connected to the generator that carry
electricity to your home and mine. The water continues past the propellor through the tailrace
into the river past the dam.

Next, we move on to the geothermal plant of Aboitiz Power which is this MakBan Geothermal
Power Plant Complex.
