Internal code designations are often referred to as “chassis codes” or “model codes”. These are assigned by
manufacturers to identify R&D and production projects, in addition, they help with efficient planning and
development.
BMW chassis codes currently consist of 4 letters; E, F, G, and I, followed by double digits. These give insight into
model production order and furthermore, provide a reference for the development of past and present models.
The BMW New Six (e3), produced in 1968, began the BMW "E" chassis code.
For ease of reference, we have categorised our BMW chassis codes list by model series
