My application to the B.

Sc (Hons) International Business (Food & Agribusiness) program at the

Royal Agricultural University has been a well-thought decision, supported enthusiastically by
my father. My father is a first-generation entrepreneur who has established a thriving venture
in processed agricultural commodities like wheat, lentils, and other grains. These grains are
either converted to flour or further cleaned and marketed for consumption. Pursuing an
undergraduate program in this subject is not only logical as an apparent successor to the
business, but also holds out a promise to introduce me to some good international
best-practices in this area. The program will ultimately help me to further strengthen the
linkage between the farmer and the users. The domestic Agro-based industry in India holds
tremendous promise. It fulfills the basic needs of the farmer in getting better prices on one
hand while ensuring quality products ready for use to the consumer on the other.
I chose to study basic sciences during my high school as I believed that this would give me a
good foundation to understand the basic processes in the food processing industry. My goal is
to understand the complete linkages in the food chain right from the requirements of the
farmer to the demands of the end consumer. In the process, I need to learn formally about
marketing, branding and since businesses such as ours are essentially owned by private
individuals / firms, it is also necessary to develop the entrepreneurial and innovative
talents. I believe that this program would give me a tailor-made holistic approach to achieve
my goals.
I have learnt about these business issues, and the need to develop the food sector from my
father as he frequently discussed his experiences with family, and during my brief summer
internships at our factories. This interest has now burgeoned into a desire to formally learn
about the mechanics of such businesses with a view to expanding our family business beyond
Indian boundaries.
Besides knowledge, such an Endeavour would also require qualities of leadership. I have
experienced leadership and team skills during my schooling days by playing cricket. I enjoy
the game, which is a national sport too. I have represented my school at the district level.
The UK is home to cricket, and I look forward to playing cricket during my undergraduate
years.
Studying in the UK, which has an academically charged environment, and is an internationally
acclaimed Centre of learning, will enthuse me to go the extra mile in my efforts. The diverse
student population and the culturally rich country will help me add an extra dimension to my
undergraduate experiences.
I am particularly interested in the Food and Agribusiness program as it not only touches on
various aspects of running a business but also focusses on this segment which as I have
explained is of direct interest to my family and me. I am excited at the prospect of
undergraduate program as it will not only give me the wherewithal to succeed in my family
business, but I would also be directly contributing to improving the food sector in our
country by bringing new ideas, better utilisation of resources and expanding the market
leading to improving the condition of our farmers too.
I request the admissions committee to consider my application favourably.
