UNITS AND MEASUREMENTS: Physical quantities – fundamental quantities – seven fundamental quantities. Supplementary
quantities – plane angle and solid angle. Units – fundamental units, supplementary units and derived units. Conventions of SI units.
Prefixes. Change, rate, gradient. Relations between physical quantities – directly and inversely proportional. Scalar quantities and
Vector quantities. Resolving a vector into perpendicular components. Derived quantities – displacement, velocity, acceleration,
momentum, force, work, power, energy – potential energy and kinetic energy, law of conservation of energy. Law of conservation of
momentum. (Simple problems based on perpendicular components of vector, potential energy and kinetic energy, work, power,

HYDROSTATICS: Fluids, density, thrust, pressure. Expression for pressure at a point inside a liquid at rest. Different units of
pressure. Measurement of pressure – manometer. Pascal’s principle and hydraulic lever. Archimedes principle and buoyant force.
Equation of continuity with derivation. Bernoulli's theorem and equation (No derivation), application – venturimeter. (Simple
problems based on pressure due to liquid, Pascal’s law, equation of continuity). (11)
OSCILLATIONS AND WAVES: Periodic motion- amplitude, frequency, time period, simple harmonic motion. Vibrations – free,
forced and resonance. Classification of wave motion- longitudinal and transverse wave motion. Laws of transverse vibrations of a
stretched string – sonometer – determination of frequency of a tuning fork. Intensity of sound and sound level – acceptable decibel
levels at different places. Noise pollution – noise control in machines. Doppler effect – expression for frequency, applications.
Acoustics of buildings, factors affecting acoustics of buildings – echo, reverberation, reverberation time, resonance, noise,
remedies. (Problems based on sonometer and Doppler effect) (11)
OPTICS: Electromagnetic waves, electromagnetic spectrum – uses of UV, IR radiations. Laws of reflection and refraction – Snell’s
law, refractive index. Spectrometer – experimental method – refractive index of a prism (no derivation). Bohr atom model. LASER-
Characteristics. Einstein’s principle - absorption, spontaneous emission and stimulated emission. Population inversion, pumping
action – types. Nd-YAG Laser – applications of lasers. (Simple problems on refractive index) (12)
HEAT AND ELECTRICITY: Heat, temperature, temperature conversion. Transmission of heat – conduction, convection, radiation.
Coefficient of thermal conductivity, Good and bad conductors of heat. Specific heat capacity– solid, liquid and gas, specific heat
capacity of gas at constant volume and constant pressure, ratio of specific heat capacity of gas (No derivation). Joule’s law of
heating. Specific heat capacity of a liquid – Joule’s calorimeter. Electric current, potential difference, Ohm’s law, resistance,
resistivity. Resistances in series and parallel. Capacitance, capacitances in series and parallel. (Simple problems on specific heat
capacity, Ohm’s law, resistance in series and parallel, resistivity, heating effect, power, capacitance in series in parallel). (12)
