DIODE APPLICATIONS

Q.1) FIG.1 shows a voltage polarity tester. it can be used to test a dc voltage of
unknown polarity .when the dc voltage is positive ,the green LED lights
up. when the dc voltage is negative ,the red LED lights up. what is the
approximate LED current ,if the dc input voltage is 50v and the resistance
is 2.2k ohm .Take the exact voltage drop across the LED is 2 volts.

Q.2) FIG.2 shows an ac voltage source driving an LED indicator .when there is
ac voltage ,there is LED current on positive half cycles .on the negative
half cycle ,the rectifier diode turns on and protects the LED from too much
reverse voltage. If the ac source voltage is 2OV rms and the series
resistance of 680ohm .What is the average LED current ?.Also calculate
the approximate power dissipation in the series resistor?

Q.3) consider the half wave rectifier circuit of FIG.3 with diode reversed.
Let 𝑉𝑠 be a sinusoidal with 15v peak amplitude and R=1.5k ohm .

use the constant voltage drop diode with 𝑉𝑑 =0.7 volts .Determine

(a) sketch the transfer characteristics .

(b)sketch the waveform of 𝑉𝑜

(c)find the average value of 𝑉𝑜

(d) find the peak current in the diode ?

(e) find the PIV (peak inverse voltage ) of the diode .

Q.4 ) consider a half wave rectifier circuit with a triangular wave input of 5
volts.peak to peak amplitude and zero average and with R=1 K ohm.
Assume that the diode can be represented by the piecewise liner model
with 𝑉𝐷𝐷 = 0.65𝑉 and 𝑟𝑑 =20 ohm .Find the average value of 𝑉𝑜 .

Q.5) Design a full wave rectifier using the circuits of FIG.4 to provide an
average output voltage of a) 10V b) 100V

In each case, find the required turn ratio of the transformer .Assume that
the conducting diode has a voltage drop of 0.7v . The ac voltage is 120v
rms.
Q.6) The circuit in FIG.5 implement a complementary output rectifier .sketch
and clearly label the waveform of 𝑉𝑂+ and 𝑉𝑂− .Assume a 0.7 v drop across
each conduction diode .if the magnitude of average of each output is to be
15 volts .find the required amplitude e of the sine wave across the entire
secondary winding. What is the PIV of each diode ?

Q.8) Design a 7.5 volts Zener regulator circuit using a 7.5v Zener specified

at 12 mAmp. The Zener has an incremental resistance 𝑟𝑧 =30 ohm and a


knee current of 0.5 mA .The regulator operates from a 10 v supply and has
a 1.2k ohm load. What is the value of R you have chosen ? .what is the
regulator output voltage when the supply voltage 10 %is high ? Or 10%
low ? What is the output voltage when both the supply is 10 % high and
load is removed ? what is smallest possible load resistor that can be used
while the zener operates at a current no lower than the knee current while
the supply is 10 % low ?

Q.9) A diode having internal resistance of 30 ohm is used for half wave
rectification as shown in FIG 3 . If the applied voltage is 50 sin(wt) and the
load resistance is 𝑅𝐿 = 800𝑜ℎ𝑚. find

output voltage is 10 volts ,what is the rms value of ripple voltage .

Q.11 ) A power supply having an output resistance 1.5 ohm supplied a full load
current of 500mA to a 50 ohm load .

a) what is the percent voltage regulation of supply ?

b) what is the no load output voltage of the supply?
