The main role of a Paralegal is to support Lawyers in their work. As a result, they are involved in a lot of different aspects of the legal profession. Helping Lawyers prepare for court cases, including opening and closing arguments and aiding in court pleadings or motions. Conduct client interviews and maintain general contact with the client. Locate and interview witnesses. Conduct investigations, statistical and documentary research. Conduct legal research. Draft legal documents, correspondence and pleadings. Summarize depositions, interrogatories and testimony. 2. Tell me about your Paralegal experience to date? My 1st job experience is when I took my training at Philippine coast guard legal department, well during my training I learned there on doing Case Digest, Filling the documents for the upcoming hearings, I do minimal outsourcing, photocopying some documents for the preparation, I rapidly enter or retype the data’s that were in hard copy, I arrange the documents based on what the lawyers instructions, I organize the papers for notarial and authentication needs, I assists visitors, answers the incoming calls and refer it to the relevant staff, reordering supplies and organize the office in neat and nice way. And the most important thing that I’ve learned is the military discipline that I will not learn in other private or corporate companies. That’s why I’m very snappy when following instructions. 3. Why do you want to be a paralegal? Being a paralegal appeals to my desire to have a meaningful career with societal impact. Working within the justice system allows me to feel like I’m making a difference in people’s lives. I choose to work for defense attorneys because I understand that everyone has the right to a fair trial, and a good defense is part of that. Without it, people who are wrongfully accused could be convicted for crimes they didn’t commit. When I work in this field, I feel like I’m making a positive impact in the world. And besides that I’m an aspiring lawyer too, so I think applying as a paralegal will also give me ideas on how to be a successful lawyer someday. And I think this is my stepping stone to become one of you. 4. Describe how you organize your day In my previous role as a Legal assistant and HR staff, I did not use any project management software but I already heard some from my father, like basecamp and nifty but I haven’t tried any. I only use my notepad and to do list applications with alarm on my phone to stay organized and also as a reminder to ensure all my tasks were carried out by the deadline. I know it’s very helpful to use PM software and If ever I am hired at your company I will take initiative to find a free project management resource online to ensure my performance would be better at sticking to deadlines and to organize my task for the day. 5. Consider a time when you missed your deadline. What could you have done differently to be more successful? At Philippine Coast Guard legal dept. I was compiling many documents for an attorney and at Maidprovider.ph I also screened and interviewed many applicants, I experienced 20 to 30 applicants per day, and it was due at the end of the day for a deployment or deposition. I was working on it when another boss directed me to do another task for their deposition instead. I wasn’t able to finish my deadline because of some unforeseen or unexpected circumstances. Well, If I could go back and do things differently, I would have prioritized the instructed work needed that was soonest and I will ask for help to be more successful, instead of trying to take on all the work by myself. 6. In your own words, what are the operational duties of a paralegal? A paralegal is an important part of a lawyer’s legal team. This person must be dedicated, organized and reliable. Paralegals have to be deadline-oriented and are expected to know how to use technological resources for research and organizing data. Paralegals might also be involved in interviewing clients or witnesses, investigating cases and collecting any information that could help a client and the attorney win their case. 7. What do you think are the most important skills a paralegal should display? Paralegals must display administrative, technical, and research skills. They should also be discrete and uphold confidentiality. In my role as a trainee in Phil. Coast Guard, I wanted to ensure my ability to grow in the position. As a result, I tasked myself with learning new skills every quarter. Ultimately, they were not expecting my desire to learn new skills and grow. And that’s where I acquire military discipline especially when it comes to confidentiality. I always remember the rule: “what you see, what you hear, what you feel, when you leave, leave it here!” WITH REGARDS TO MILITARY SECRECY, WE MUST TAKE CARE OF ANY INFORMATION WE HAD. And I think that is one of the most important skills a paralegal should have. 8. INTRODUCE YOUR SELF I’m Camille Pauline Duca, my nickname is Chescka, you can call me Ms. Camille or Ms. Chescka.
