(CDR) Template
Introduction
The Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) is the technical report required for Engineers Australia
(EA) membership and Australian Skilled Migration.
It is the document to assess the engineering degrees of the engineers from such institutions or
countries which are not the members of Sydney Accord, Washington Accord, or Dublin Accord.
Some of these countries include Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, China, Sri Lanka etc.
The engineers from these countries need to have their competencies approved by Engineers Australia
before they can secure work opportunities within Australia under the codes of Australian and New
Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZCO).
A CDR comprises of three sections. Each of these sections should be saved as a separate document
prior to submitting to Engineers Australia.

1. Continuing Professional
Development (CPD)
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the means by which you keep up-to-date with
developments in your field of engineering after you have gained your undergraduate qualification.
All relevant CPD must be included in your CDR application. This CPD must be provided in list format
(title, date, duration, and venue) and may include details of:
The Continuing Professional Development section should be limited to one page and should be used
to highlight any trainings or certifications that you have pursued and obtained after your formal
engineering qualifications. It is not necessary to include certificates from each course
The view from Engineers Australia is that Continuing Professional Development (CPD) helps you
maintain up-to-date technical skills and knowledge of processes, technology and legislation. It also
enables you to attain and maintain your Chartered Status.

2. Career Episode
A career episode is an account of your engineering education and/or work experience. Each career
episode focuses upon a specific period or distinct aspect of your engineering activity.
For a CDR, you need to add at least three career episodes where each career episode represents
your roles and activities on a specific project.
Give consideration to the fact that each career episode should focus on a different period or aspect
of your engineering activity.
Each episode should focus on how you applied your engineering knowledge and skills in the
nominated occupation.
a specific position that you occupied or currently occupy (in this case, the career episode
must comprise more than a mere duty statement);
Each career episode must be written in English, in your own words and will act as evidence of your
communication skills to your assessor.
Each career episode must clearly demonstrate the application of engineering knowledge and skills in
the nominated occupation. That is, state what you did and describe how you did it, emphasising your
own personal role in episode (for example I designed, I investigated etc.)
Each career episode should emphasise any engineering problems identified by you and any
particular problem solving techniques you applied. The purpose of this is to assess your personal
contribution in meeting project and task objectives.
Use References
You must number each paragraph in each of your career episodes. This is necessary to construct the
Summary Statement. The following system is recommended:

You should state what you did and then describe how you did it. It is not sufficient to describe the
activities performed by a team or group - your own role must be clearly identified. Remember it is
your own personal engineering competencies that are being assessed.
2 Try and avoid including excessive technical details (photos, calculations, tables) in your career
episode.
3 It is not sufficient to merely describe work in which you were involved. Career Episodes must be
written in the first person singular clearly indicating your own personal role in the work
described.
4 Remember, the career episode has to be about you. It should be about what ‘I did’, not what ‘we
did’ or what ‘I was involved in’ and describe how you did it.

3. Summary Statement (SS)
Once you have completed your career episodes you must analyse them to ensure you have
addressed all the competency elements for the nominated occupational category.
The Summary statement is the most crucial part of the CDR and cross-references the competency
elements with the particular paragraph in your Career Episode where each element occurs.
Download and complete the appropriate summary statement for your nominated occupational
category. The summary statement templates are available on the engineers Australia website.
You do not need to cover all the indicators within each competency element.
Please note that only one Summary Statement is required for all three episodes.
