TOPIC TQM- Communication Information
RESOURCE SPEAKER Mr. Catalino N. Mendoza

Instruction: Using your critical thinking and imagination, discuss thoroughly the following
statements in relation to TQM concepts:
Guide Questions:
1. Why is TQM considered as a Philosophy and not as a management requirement?
It is a culture not, a business process. It tackles about making incremental changes a
hobby for better working environment and services. This considers quality as a ‘never ending’
improvement. The success of TQM mainly depends on the achievement of internal as well as
external customer satisfaction. Internal customer satisfaction is a prerequisite to achieve external
customer satisfaction.

TQM moves the responsibility of quality assurance away from designated quality
managers and instead involves all members of a company. This philosophy encourages closer
relationships between suppliers and manufacturers and customers. It also indicates that company
processes should continually change to meet the needs of the market and the culture at large.

2. How can we minimize organizational problem through TQM?

Total Quality Management is a framework revolving around the principle that quality
needs to be maintained in every aspect of a company’s operations. This means that everyone in the
organization is accountable for the quality of the output, leading to fewer errors and continual
improvement of operations. The end goal of TQM is doing the right things, right the first time,
every time.

In manufacturing, using a TQM approach ensures that internal practices are set up to
reduce errors and streamline processes.

While an approach like Six Sigma looks at reducing defects through a methodological

process, TQM focuses on combining people and processes to reduce errors. It takes a preventative
approach to quality, usually through error-proofing or early error detection.

3. Aside from its lower costs of production, why should we use TQM system?
Aside from its lower cost of production, TQM oversees all activities and tasks needed to
maintain a desired level of excellence within a business and its operations. This includes the
determination of a quality policy, creating and implementing quality planning and assurance, and
quality control and quality improvement measures.  This helps ensure all employees are working
toward the goals set forth for the company, improving function in each area.

As there is continuous evaluation at all the stages of the business, TQM ensures that the
organisation can adapt to various changes in the economy.
As a result, the organisation gets a higher competitive advantage and a strong image as a
highly adaptable leader in the market.

Delivering superior products and services is paramount. Quality management systems

provide the information and guidelines for doing things correctly, helping business achieve
optimum cost efficiency and utilization of resources.

4. In your personal opinion, how should goods and services be produced?

Customers are almost always satisfied when their expectations are met. When they expect
a certain product or service, and you deliver it without problems and at a fair price, you’ve built a
solid customer relationship.  Happy, satisfied customers become repeat customers and they
provide word-of-mouth marketing – the most powerful kind.

TQM should provides the quality assurance that customers will get what they expect, as
well as a process for managing unsatisfied customers, make needed corrections and prevent
similar re-occurrences. Being able to consistently produce desired outcomes without wasting
resources like time, material, and money is critical for a business to make it over the long haul.

Quality is not just about a product or service meeting (somewhat arbitrary) requirements.
It is about how the whole organization operates to understand customer expectations and
competitively deliver customer satisfaction.

5. What are the characteristics of Total Quality Management System?

TQM is considered a customer-focused process that focuses on consistently improving
business operations. It strives to ensure all associated employees work toward the common goals
of improving product or service quality, as well as improving the procedures that are in place for
production.

Quality can be defined as an attribute that differentiates a product or service from its
competitors. Total quality management makes an organization stand apart from the rest. With
increased competition and globalization, total quality management has become a common practice
of modern-day businesses. Individuals (especially managers and leaders) use this tool to improve a
product’s design, ensure increased revenue, eliminate wastage and defects, and enhance the
market image. Most of all, they help employees find meaning in their work, in addition to
encouraging collaboration and teamwork.
