A. Trace the history of the painting below. What are the functions of Juan Luna’s
Spoliarium? Explain. (20 points)

Juan Luna's oil painting, Spoliarium, portrays two slain gladiators getting led into the
Spoliarium. It focused on the carnage caused by gladiatorial bouts. Spoliarium is a Latin term
that refers to the Roman Colosseum's basement, which is where defeated and wounded gladiators
are tossed, stripped of their material possessions. It demonstrates that they were compelled to
amuse the Roman tyrants and Spaniards with their deaths and make self-sacrifices for the
prestige of the Romans and Spaniards. Additionally, people were treated as if they were less
valuable than animals. During his statement, Dr. Jose Rizal noted that the art embodied the
symbolic importance and essential nature of the Filipino's communal, ethical, and political life. It
includes civilization in great peril, civilization undeserving of redemption, rationale, and naivete
engaged in open conflict with bigotry, religious zealotry, and equality. He indeed stated Juan
Luna's stated objective for creating Spoliarium, which roused Filipinos from ignorance,
blindness, intellectual obscurity, and tyranny. They were both aware that Filipinos fell behind the
other countries as a result of colonization.

Title of the painting: Love between spaces

I chose the title "LOVE BETWEEN SPACES" for my artwork because it's all about the power of
love that enables everything to be possible despite the spaces or distance represented in the
painting.

Everybody starts the dating scene with different hopes. Some individuals would like to travel the
world and have a pleasant time with the ones they encounter. There's always the possibility of a
brief commitment to getting individuals through vacations with somebody by their side till
summertime. The typical concept of a long-lasting engagement could also be a great desire.
Whatever you choose from your romantic life, you'll have to choose between seeing somebody
nearby and somebody who lives across the country. Trying to date somebody who resides in
your area has many benefits, including frequent outings and the elimination of the need to
organize lengthy travels to visit each other. Put some fuel in the tank, and you're on your journey
to your beloved person's house for a meal.

Being in a relationship with somebody who lives a long distance away can indeed be difficult.
However, when you understand you are with the one, even the most trying moments are
worthwhile. This is the subject of the painting. It was about two lovers who constantly miss each
other, who celebrate the holidays and other occasions apart, and whose lousy internet access
drives them nuts on a typical day. It isn't easy. However, it's reasonable to acknowledge that
space matters nothing whenever anyone matters a lot.

I utilized both warm and cool colors concurrently. On the right, I utilized cold hues to indicate
that it was nighttime. Yet, if you look closely, you'll notice that I used both light and dark blue to
signify that it's dawn and the sun is ready to rise. The sky's tint exudes a sense of cool
massiveness and serenity. I also used the shades of pink for the tree in this section to emphasize
that it is early daylight, not nighttime. Colored trees are only seen in the light or on a bright
morning. On the other hand, I used a warm tint to signify sunset on the other side. Orange is
associated with sunlight and is a symbol of illumination. As you may have noticed, I used the
color black for the tree to emphasize that it is nighttime or the beginning of the evening.
Moreover, I chose the chilly tone for the guy since it is regarded as a manly hue and is associated
with knowledge and stability. I picked the warm one for the woman since it is viewed as 'gentle'
and cheerful, which are characteristics of women.

Art is a necessary component of human life. It can express feelings and motivate people. While
the arts serve a variety of purposes, I believe that this painting serves a personal one. The arts
serve various personal functions, including remedial art, self-expression, recreation, and
enjoyment. This one acts as a means for my self-expression. That is not to say that I am required
to be in the circumstance. It's just that, especially during a pandemic, people frequently believe
that remoteness is a detriment to all relationships. However, in this painting, I want to convey
that love is a solid foundation that no one can ever undermine. True love is everlasting.
Distancing oneself from another person is never an impediment to intimacy. There may be
additional elements affecting the relationship, but it is not the distance.

This art contributes by influencing ideas, instilling ideals, and translating emotions beyond time
and location. By doing so, people will grasp the essence of connectedness and love, which is not
limited to daily interactions but encompasses all forms of genuine, profound intimacy.
