EXPERIMENT 1

HYDROLYSIS OF ETHYL ACETATE

2022 / 02 / 07

MONDAY
THEORY:

Hydrolysis means the reaction of salt (or ester) with water produce the

original acid and base (or alcohol) it is the reverse process of

:neutralization Hydrolysis of ethyl acetate in acid medium is given by

CHyCOOC2Hs + H20 -acid-> CHaCOOH + CHOH

The acid added acts as a catalyst to accelerate the reaction. Since water

exists usually in much higher concentration than ester, the reaction is

,treated kinetically as a first order reaction

Ln {a/ (a-x)} = Kt

Aim of the Experiment:

Determining the half-life: the consumption of half of the substance at

which the reaction begins (half-life) t1/2.

CHEMICALS AND EQUIPMENT:

.Ethyl acetate, 250 ml 0.1 M HCL, 250 ml 0.1 M NaH, ph.ph. indicator and titration tools

PROCEDURE :

.Transfer 100 ml 0.1 M HCL into a flask and add 5 ml ethyl acetate

Shake thoroughly and record the time of mixing as the zero time

.of reaction

After 5 minutes withdraw 10 ml of the reaction solution and run

into about 20 ml of ice-cooled water. Titrate the solution rapidly

with 0.1 M NaOH, using ph.ph. as indicator. The volume of NaOH

,taker (V: ) is equivalent to HCL ( C) + the resulting acetic acid (x)

.I.e. (c+x)

.Repeat the titration after 10,20,30,40,60,80, 100 and 120 minutes

For the determination of the initial concentration (a ), take 10 ml

of the reaction solution at any time and add about 50 ml water in

a small flask with an air condenser and boil on water bath for

about one hour. Cool the flask and run into a conical flask and

titrate as usual with 0.1 M NaH. The volume of NaOH taken in

this step (V. ) is equivalent to HCL ( c) + acetic acid of all ester

Discation
1- After doing the experiment and the Calculation the rate constant ( k ) = 0.08
Which is less that above the reaction .

2- The calculation and T1\2 = 0.01
