EXPERIMENT 1:

Preparation of Diluted Hydrochloric Acid

SPECIAL NOTE

1. When the reaction is over, remove all the connection before removing the flame. Do not begin the
experiment proper until the instructor has checked the set-up.
2. Prevent backflow of the liquid inside the flask.
3. Get the following data:
a. Wt. of the flask + assigned volume of distilled water + cover
b. Wt. of the flask + assigned volume of distilled water + cover + HCl gas
c. Weight of HCl gas
d. % yield = g HCl (A.Y.) x 100
g HCl (T.Y.)
4. In addition to % yield, compute for the % w/v of the diluted HCl obtained, assuming the increase of
volume due to dissolved HCl as negligible

MATERIALS

R Nacl R Erlenmeyer flasks

R 10% NaOH solution R Bunsen burner
R Concentrated Sulfuric Acid R Iron stand
R Phenolphthalein R Iron ring
R 125/250mL distilling flask R Clamp
R Separatory funnel R Tripod
R Wire gauze

PROCEDURES

Introduce about 30 grams (the amount designated) of NaCl (free of lumps) into a fry 125/250mL distilling flask,
provided with a dry separatory funnel on top. The outlet tube of distilling flask is connected in series with one
condensing 250mL Erlenmeyer flask containing distilled water and a second 125mL Erlenmeyer flask partially
filled with 10% NaOH solution with a few drops of phenolphthalein T.S. Slowly run 36g of concentrated Sulfuric
acid from the separatory funnel into the distilling flask. A reaction takes place immediately and continues for
some time without the application of heat. When the reaction slows down, gently heat the reaction mixture for
30 minutes. After the reaction has been completed, disconnect 250mL flask and cover. The Hydrogen Chloride
gas passes over into the first absorption flask where most of it is absorbed by water. That which escapes passes
into the 10% NaOH solution. By adding a few drops of phenolphthalein to the alkaline, it is possible to ascertain
whether the gas coming from the first flask is free form the hydrogen chloride.
