Continuous Medium Mechanics
and Theory of Structures
1. Objectives

To introduce the student into the practice on Reinforced Concrete, design calculation
methods, estimation of the loads that should be considered, design of structural elements,
including detailing, materials control, execution and structural durability. These points will be
covered from the perspective of the construction and the site work.

At the end, the student should be able to design and calculate elements of medium level of
difficulty made with reinforced concrete. Additionally, the student should be able to
understand the technical information provided by other professionals from the field and
executing reinforced concrete elements.

The objective of the laboratory work is to show the software to the students as well as
commenting several points seen during the theoretical lessons.

2. Type of structure

1.1. Description of the building

The laboratory task consists on defining and calculating the structure of a building for
administrative use located in an industrial area from the city Castelló de la Plana.

This building includes:

• a basement that will be a parking (height: 3.20m)

• a main floor that will be used for commercial purposes for small shops and business
(height: 3.20 m)
• three intermediate floors for private home apartments (height: 2.88 m)
• rooftop terrace accessible for private use with a room for the elevator (height: 2.88 m).

The height dimension is measured between the top plane of the structure. To calculate the
free height of each floor, the width of the slab should be subtracted from that amount.

Basement walls will be placed in the façade. Floor slabs will be unidirectional, nervated on
site, waffle slab with recoverable filler blocks, and some of them of mass slab. The
distribution of these systems is detailed in the following table:

Group Description Type Of Slab Translation

6 Top of the small room for
Mass slab Losa maciza
the elevator
5 Ferrace (slab 5) Alveolar slab Losa alveolar
4 Prestressed secondary beam, Unidireccional vigueta
Planta 3 (slab 4)
unidirectional pretensada
3 Prestressed secondary Unidireccional vigueta
Planta 2 (slab 3)
beam,unidirectional pretensada
2 On site secondary beam, Unidireccional vigueta in
Planta 1 (slab 2)
unidirectional situ
1 Planta baja (slab 1) Waffle slab, with recoverable Bidireccional casetón
blocks recuperable

foundations

1.2.2. Imposed loads (variable loads, Q)

Imposed loads (Table 3.1. CTE SE AE):

• Basement: parking.
• Main floor: shops and business area.
• Floors 1-3: home apartments.
• Terrace/Roof: accessible for private use.

Wind and snow: Castellón, city center.

1.3. Materials

If f < 3
Concrete for the structure: HA-25 / F / 18 / IIa
Steel for the structure: B 500 S
Level of control of the execution: Normal level of control.

If 3 ≤ f ≤ 6
Concrete for the structure: HA-30 / B / 20 / IIa
Steel for the structure: B 500 S
Level of control of the execution: Normal level of control.

If f > 6
Concrete for the structure: HA-35 / P / 16 / IIa
Steel for the structure: B 500 S
Level of control of the execution: Normal level of control.

Note: IIa is equivalent to a XS1 environment

Aggregates will be calcareous in all the cases with the maximum size indicated in the
previous tables.

The maximum possible length of a rebar will be 12 m.

1.4. Ground properties

The geotechnical report indicates that the ground is a dense sand with a bearing capacity
of:
Bearing capacity of the ground: 245 kN/m2.
Balast coefficient 100000 kN/m3.

TASKS FOR THE STUDENT.

Each student will submit the task, which consists on the calculation of the structure
described in this document which will be reported in a technical document.

The students, depending on their DNI, will adapt the geometry of the structure as well
as the design loads.
