CRISPR TECHNOLOGY

Introduction
Have you ever visited an oncology hospital? Patients from different
places, races ages, and social statuses meet together at the same
place just with one common goal: fight unpleasant cancer. For many
people, it could be a long life battle for others just a final battle in
life. Fortunately, science has given some hope to these people. Yes, a
breakthrough advance in medicine has provided a way to fight and
treat, and hopefully cure cancer. It is the CRISPR procedure, a
revolutionary process that not only will cure cancer but prevent many
diseases in the human person. No doubt it’s one of the most recent
and important advances in medicine.

What Is Crispr?
CRISPR is an anacronym for (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short
Palindromic Repeat) and it’s a powerful and revolutionary technology
for editing genomes. It’s a group or structure of bacteria that forms
the essence of CRISPR genome editing technology. This structure can
be programmed to select a specific group of genetic codes and to edit
DNA at the exact position. Also, investigators can permanently
change genes in living cells and organisms, and in the future making
it possible to rectify mutations at specific locations in the human
genome to manage genetic causes of disease.

Crispr Importance And Advances

One of the most important aspects of CRISPR is the possible use it

could have in medicine due to the possibility of developing gene
therapy in which, in addition to identifying the genes responsible for
genetic alterations, these genes could be replaced, corrected, and
eliminated in the patient, allowing the treatment and prevention of
hereditary diseases.

On the other hand, it must be taken into account that antimicrobial

resistance represents one of the greatest challenges of our time for
the fact that the indiscriminate use of antibiotics has allowed the
selection of multiresistant bacteria, so that the options for effective
treatment have decreased and in some cases have been exhausted.
For this, new strategies have been sought to combat bacterial
infections and an adaptation in the use of the CRISRP/Cas system
could offer a new efficient option in the treatment of bacterial
infections.

Finally, the CRISPR/Cas system can be specifically programmed to act

only on one type of bacterial population, leaving other populations
intact, for example, those that make up the human intestinal
microbiota that are beneficial to us.

Impact In Modern Life

Specifically, CRISPR is a region of the DNA of some bacteria that acts

as an immune mechanism against viruses, e.g. bacteria that survive
the attack store the information of this aggressor. When the virus
attacks again, the bacterium identifies the undesirable genes thanks
to the information already stored and this memory allows it to
destroy the virus.
CRISPR technology has caused a great impact on society, since it
allows scientists to modify or correct, even rewrite the genetic codes
of any organism. As well as in medicine, food, agriculture or
environment. It can cure genetic diseases and create drought-
resistant crops. Also was used as both a potential therapeutics tool
and as a diagnostic tool for the coronavirus.

Conclusion
CRISPR is poised to revolutionize medicine, with the potential to cure
a range of genetic diseases, including neurodegenerative disease,
blood disorders, cancer, and ocular disorders and has had an
enormous impact on scientific research in just a few years,
contributing to advances in medicine and biotechnology.
