6. A balance between plants and animals is essential. Why?
Ans: i) Animals and plants depend on each other.
ii) Plants give animals food to eat and oxygen to breathe.
iii) Animals breathe in this oxygen and give out carbon dioxide.
iv) Plants use this carbon dioxide to prepare food during photosynthesis.
So, plants and animals both are needed to maintain the right balance
in nature.

 E. Think and answer.
1. The leaves of a plant kept in the dark do not produce starch. Why?
Ans: i. Water, carbon dioxide, chlorophyll and sunlight are required by
plants to prepare food.
ii. The leaves of plant kept in the dark do not produce starch as
photosynthesis does not take place in those leaves in absence of
sunlight.

2. A yellow leaf cannot prepare food. Why?


Ans: i. Only green leaves can make food for the plants since they contain
chlorophyll.
ii. A yellow leaf does not contain chlorophyll. So, it cannot prepare
food.
3. Fish live longer in an aquarium with water plants in it, than in one
without them. Why?
Ans: During photosynthesis, a leaf takes in carbon dioxide and gives out
oxygen and water vapour through the stomata. So, fishes get more
oxygen to breathe in, in an aquarium with water plants in it, than in
one without them.
