LESSON I
INTRODUCTION

ASTROLOGY, the science of the influence of stars (planets) on human affairs, is the oldest and
an accurate science. This science is propounded by the Creator Himself and lord Brahma handed it
down to sage Garg at the time of creation. From the sage Garg other seers learnt it and it was spread
all over the world.
The Hindu sages called Astrology as JYOTISHA (Jyoti = Light, ) or HORA SAHSTRA (Hora =
Time and SHASTRA means knowledge). They observed by study, experiments, concentration of mind
and perhaps intuition ( DIVYA DRASTI ) that the planets move through their orbits and exercise an
influence on the Earth which is felt by the inhabitants on the Earth.
NINE PLANETS
THE Sanskrit word for plants is ‘ GRAHA’ which literally means that heavenly body which
seizes ,grasps ,takes hold of. The Hindu astrologers recognizes nine planets- the Sun , the Moon ,
Mars , Mercury , Jupiter , Venus , Saturn , Rahu and Ketu. In fact the Sun and Moon are
luminaries. Rahu and Ketu are shadowy planets carrying no mass and volume.
All planets revolve around the Sun in their specific orbits.
ZODIAC
The pathway of the planets (orbit ) are commonly known as a ZODIAC. This is, according to one
system, divide into twelve parts known as Zodiacal sign or Rasis. And according to another
system,Zodiac is divided into twenty seven equal parts known as Nakshastras or Lunar Mansions.
RASIS
There are twelve Rasis or zodiacal signs and each Rasi is equal to 300 { 3600/12= 300 }

NAKSHATRA
There are 27 Nakshatra or Constellations. Each Nakshatra measures 130 20’ of arc [3600/27

= 130 20’] and consists of four quarters or PADAS. [130 20’ /4 = 30 20 ] . They are reckoned from

zero degree of the zodiac.

Besides acquiring a good Guna it is of utmost importance that the constellation the planet is
placed in must be a benefic planet to the particular Lagan. A planet placed in the constellation of a
planet malefic to a particular lagan gives only untoward results. The mixed results will be experienced
in other conditions.
LESSON - V
CHARACTERISTICS OF PLANETS
At birth, the planets impress their especial influence on the native which remain paramount
throughout life. A planet gives influence the native according to
(a) their inherent nature
(b) the zodiacal sign and Nakshatra they occupy
(c) the planets associated or aspecting it
(d) the houses it owes in the horoscope
(f) the house it occupy in the horoscope
(e) the houses it aspect in the horoscope
First three characters (a, b & c ) are general while last three characters (d, e., f) are personal varying
from individuals to individuals . The general characteristics of planets are

1. GUNAS : There are three Gunas under which planets are classified
Satwic guna . this makes a person soft, pious, intelligent and kind. Sun, Moon, Jupiter

9 FRIENDSHIP: There are two types of friendship found among planets (a ) Permanent
Friendship and (b) Temporary Friendship
(a) Permanent Friendship or Naisargika Maitri : This shows weather a planet is
sympathetic or have an enmity with other planet . By friendship we mean that the rays of one planet
are intensified by those of the other, declared as friend, while the same rays will be counteracted by a
planet who is enemy. This can be calculated by considering the
Mooltrikona sign of each planet. Accordingly,
Friends are the rulers of II, IV, V, VIII, IX, XII and exaltation signs from the Mooltrikona signs
of the concern planet.

Enemies are the rulers of the signs III, VI, VII, X, XI, from the Mooltrikona signs of the concern
planet.

Neutral are the common rulers of a friend house and an enemy house.

For example, Leo is the Mooltrikona sign of the SUN. Therefore, friends, neutrals and enemies
of the SUN will be as under:-
II house is Virgo and its ruler is Mercury. Thus Mercury is a friend.
III house is Libra and its ruler is Venus. Thus Venus is an enemy.
IV house is Scorpio and its ruler is Mars. Thus Mars is a friend.
V house is Sagittarius and its ruler is Jupiter. Thus Jupiter is a friend.
VI house is Capricorn and its ruler is Saturn. Thus Saturn is an enemy
VII house is Aquarius and its ruler is Saturn. Thus Saturn is an enemy
VIII house is Pisces and its ruler is Jupiter . Thus Jupiter is a friend
IX house is Aries and its ruler is Mars. Thus Mars is a friend.
X house is Taurus and its ruler is Venus. Thus Venus is an enemy
XI house is Gemini and its ruler is Mercury. Thus Mercury is an enemy
XII house is Cancer and its ruler is Moon . Thus Moon is a friend .

It is clear from above that Moon, Mars and Jupiter are friends to the Sun by owning friendly
houses from Leo. Mercury is neutral as it owes II house , a friendly house , and XI house which
is an enemy from Leo. Similarly Venus and Saturn are enemy by owning enemy houses from
Leo. The same rule is applicable to other planets also. Please see table 5-3 for ready reference.

Table: 5-3
Planets Friends Neutrals Enemies
Sun Moon, Mars, Jupiter Mercury Saturn, Venus
Moon Sun, Mercury Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn None
Mars Sun, Moon, Jupiter Venus, Saturn Mercury
Mercury Sun, Venus Mars, Jupiter, Saturn Moon
Jupiter Sun, Moon, Mars Saturn Venus, mercury
Venus Mercury, Saturn Mars, Jupiter Sun, Moon
Saturn Mercury, Venus Jupiter Sun, Moon, Mars

(b) Temporary Friendship or Tatkalika Maitri:- This means temporary or for the time being and is
based upon the mutual placement of the planets in the horoscope. Planets found in the II, III, IV, X,
XI, and XII signs or houses from
other planet becomes temporary friend to it while planets in remaining signs or
houses become temporary enemy. Suppose the Sun is Aries while Mars is Libra.
Here, Sun and Mars are VII to each other hence will be considered as temporary
Enemy although they are permanent friends

PANCH MAITRY: If we combine both types of planets friendship, we can get FIVE
types relations and commonly called them as PANCH MAITRY.

Permanent Friend + Temporary Friend = Best Friend or Adhi Mitra

Permanent friend + Temporary Enemy = Neutral or SAMA
Permanent Neutral + Temporary Friend = Friend o Mitra
Permanent Neutral + Temporary Enemy = Enemy or Shatru
Permanent Enemy + Temporary Enemy = Bitter Enemy or Adhi Shatu
In case of Rahu and Ketu Panch mairty is not considered.

10. Aspect: Aspect means Drishti or sight by which a planet see another planet or house
or a sign and exercise its influence. The Sun, Moon, Mercury and aspect the VII HOUSE OR
RASI FROM THEIR POSITION (AND NOT THE VII HOUSE ) WHILE MARS ASPECTS IV, VII AND
VIII HOUSES ; JUPITER ASPECTS V, VII AND IX HOUSES AND SATURN ASPECTS III, VII AND X
HOUSES FROM THEIR POSITION. See table 5-4 for ready reference.
Table 5-4
Planets in sign or Sun /Moon/ Mercury/ Venus Mars Jupiter Saturn
House
I Aries VII or 7 sign 4,7,8 5,7,9 3,7,10
II Taurus VIII OR 8 SIGN 5,8,9 6,8,10 4,8,11
III Gemini IX OR 9 SIGN 6,9,10 7,9,11 5,9,12
IV Cancer X OR 10 SIGN 7,10,11 8,10,12 6,10,1
V Leo XI OR 11 SIGN 8,11,12 9,11,1 7,11,2
VI Virgo XII OR 12 SIGN 9,12,1 10,12,2 8,12,3
VII Libra I OR 1 SIGN 10,1,2 11,1,3 9,1,4
VIII Scorpio II OR 2 SIGN 11,2,3 12,2,4 10,2,5
IX Sagittarius III OR 3 SIGN 12,3,4 1,3,5 11,3,6
X Capricorn IV OR 4 SIGN 1,4,5 2,4,6 12,4,7
XI Aquarius V OR 5 SIGN 2,5,6 3,5,7 1,5,8
XII Pisces VI OR 6 SIGN 3,6,7 4,6,8 2,6,9

From table 5-4 it is obvious that planets are in Sagittarius sign then Jupiter will aspect
1,3,5 sign ; Mars will aspect 12,3,4 signs ; Saturn will aspect 11,3,6 signs while other planets
will aspect only 3 sign i.e. Gemini

11. Orbs:- All planets have an area of maximum influence around them which is commonly known as
ORBS or Deeptansha . According to western astrologers, the Orbs of the planets are:- Sun – 17, Moon
– 12, Mars – 7, Mercury – 7, Venus – 8 , Jupiter – 12 and Saturn – 9 degrees. According to
Hindu astrologers the orbs or Deeptansha of nine planets are Sun- 15, Moon- 12;
Mars- 8; Mercury-7 Jupiter – 9 , Venus – 7 and Saturn – 9 degrees.
How to calculate Orbs
(a) Divide the diameter of the orb of the planet by 2 to get the radius.
(b) Now, adding and subtracting the value of radius from the longitude of planet the exact
orbs of planet in individual horoscope is obtained.

Suppose Jupiter longitude is Cancer 10 degrees in a horoscope .and its orbs is 9o

(a ) radius of Jupiter orb = 9/2 = 4 degree and 30 minute.
( b ) Therefore, the orbs of Jupiter will be from 5 30’ to 14 30’ degrees of Cancer in the said
example. Similarly the orbs of other planets can be obtained.
This orbs influence will also applicable to the houses the planet aspect. Thus, 5 30’ to 14 30’ of
Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces will have greater influence of Jupiter then the rest of the degrees
of the signs.

12. Relationship: According to the placement of a planet in a Rasi there are FOUR types of planets
relationship. They are 1. EXCHANGE 2. MUTUAL ASPECT 3. ASSOCIATION 4. ONE SIDE ASPECT

1. EXCHANGE: When two planets mutually occupy each others signs such condition is known as
exchange of signs. Suppose, Mars is in Libra, ruled by Venus. If Venus occupy either Aries or
Scorpio sign, Mars and Venus have exchanged their sign. This is the most powerful planetary
relationship. This makes all the houses owned by them in the horoscope very strong.

2. Mutual Aspect: When two planets are placed VII th to each other , they are supposed to aspect
each other. Suppose, Mars is in Libra and Venus is in Aries. IN such condition Mars will aspect
Venus and Venus, in turn, will also aspect Mars. Beside this, Mutual aspect is also possible
between Mars and Saturn when Saturn occupies IVth house from Mars. IN such situation , Mars
aspects Saturn by his IVth aspect and Saturn , in turn , aspects Mars by her X th aspect. For
example, Mars in Libra and Saturn is in Capricorn. Here, Mars aspects Saturn and Saturn aspect
Mars. ( for aspect refer table 5-4 )

3. Association : When two or more planets occupy the same sign , they are said to be in
association. i.e Jupiter and Moon in Cancer etc.

4. One Side Aspect : In such situation one planet aspect the other planet but second planet is not
aspecting the first one. For example, Jupiter is in Gemini, sign ruled by Mercury, and Sun in
Aquarius , sign rule by Saturn. Here, Jupiter will aspect Sun by his IX th aspect but Sun will not
aspect a he can aspect only Leo sign from Aquarius

13. Direction:
North East – Jupiter and Ketu EAST – Sun South East – Venus
SOUTH - Mars South West – Rahu WEST – Saturn -
North West - Moon NORTH - Mercury

Vipreet Raj Yoga

This Yoga arises under following conditions
(i)If Vith lord in VIII or XIIth house (Harsha Yoga)
or(ii)If VIIIth lord in VIth or XIIth house (Vipreet Saral yoga)
or(iii) if XIIth lord in VIth or VIIIth house (Vipreet Vimal Yoga)
It is considered a good yoga for high financial status but influx of money is not consistence.
Example-3: A male born on 27/12/1965 at 2:30 pm at Long; 750 50’ E and Lat; 220 42’N
Balance of Mars Dasa 2 Y 8M 8D
In the above horoscope, 6 th lord, mercury, is occupied the 8 th house. This is the horoscope
of film star Mr. Salman Khan.
His financial status is known and luxurious life he spend.

(d) Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga

This yoga also gives immense wealth to the native suddenly. This yoga occurs in following

conditions.
(i) When a planet in the debilitated state is in a Kendra from lagan or Moon.
If the Lord of a planet in a debilitated state is in the ascendant or Kendra from the Moon, for
example Jupiter in Capricorn sign is debilitated, then the Lord of Capricorn, Saturn must be in the
ascendant or Kendra from the Moon.
(ii) If a planet is debilitated in a sign and another planet exalted in that very sign is placed in
the ascendant or Kendra from the Moon.
For example, Saturn is debilitated in Aries sign and Sun is exalted in Aries, if the Sun is in the
ascendant or Kendra from the Moon, then it becomes a Neech Bhang Raj Yoga.
(iii) If a planet is debilitated in a sign is aspected by the Lord of that sign, it creates Neech
Bhang Raj Yoga.
For example, Mercury is debilitated in Pisces sign, it should be aspected by Jupiter, The Lord of
Pisces Jupiter.
(iv) When a planet is placed in its debilitated sign and the Lord of the exalted sign of the same
planet is placed in the Kendra from each other, then Neech Bhang Raj Yoga is formed.
For example, Mars is debilitated in Cancer sign and exalted in Capricorn, Saturn is the Lord of
Capricorn, so if the Moon and Saturn are in Kendra from each other, Neech Bhang Raj Yoga is formed.
Example-4: A male born on 14/3/1879 at 11:30 am at Long; 100 0’ E and Lat; 480 23’N. Balance of
Mercury Dasa 9Y 11M 26D

In above horoscope, Mercury is in debilitated sign (Pisces) and Venus, who gets exalted in
Pisces, are in conjugation.
This is Albert Einstein Horoscope who won the Noble prize in 1921 during Sun dasa (placed in X
th house) and Venus sub-period (Vth lord in Xth house)
