question is 12.5 points.

EXPERIMENT 1: DISTILLATION COLOMN APPLICATIONS

A mixture of substances A and B is separated from each other by batch distillation. The graph created
from the data obtained during the process is as follows. The molecular weights of A and B are
80 kg/ kmole and 120 kg / kmole, respectively. The volume of the boiler pot is 0.018 m 3. It is known
that the initial volume fraction of A in the boiler pot is 0.4. Densities ρA and ρB are given as 2.5 g/cm3
and 3.9 g/cm3, respectively. According to this;

a) Find the volumes of A and B at the beginning, the total weight of the mixture, the density of the
mixture.
b) Find the total number of moles (W1) in the boiling vessel initially.
c) As a result of the distillation process, find the number of moles (W 2) in the boiling vessel.
d) Find the mole fraction of component A (xdA) in the distillate collection vessel.

EXPERIMENT 2: CLIMBING FILM EVAPORATOR

a) What are the parameters that affect evaporator selection?

b) In a single-effect evaporator, 1000 kg/h steam is used to evaporate sugar solution. The
temperature of steam is 150°C and the boiling point of the solution is 100°C. The overall heat
transfer coefficient of evaporator is 1704 W/m2.K. Calculate the required heat transfer area.
Saturated vapor enthalpy at 150°C: 2745 kJ/kg
Saturated liquid enthalpy at 150°C: 632 kJ/kg

EXPERIMENT 3: RESIDENCE-TIME DISTRIBUTION IN PACKED COLUMN

Residence time distribution analysis was carried out with the tracer in a reactor. The tracer
concentration at the reactor outlet stream increased linearly from 0 mg/L to 15 mg/L within the first 5
minutes, then the concentration decreased linearly to 0 mg/L within the next 10 minutes. Accordingly,
answer the following questions.

a) Sketch the C(t)-time graph.

b) Considering the mean residence time (tm) is 6.7 min, calculate the variance.

EXPERIMENT 4: KINETICS OF THE IODINATION OF ACETONE

A reaction is known to exhibit first order kinetics. At 300 K the concentration of reactant is reduced to
one half of its initial value after 5000 seconds. In contrast, at 310 K the concentration is reduced to one
half after 1000 seconds. Calculate the followings;

a) The rate constant for the reaction at 300 K?

b) The time required for the reactant concentration to reduce to one quarter of its initial value at 310
K?
c) The activation energy of the reaction?

EXPERIMENT 5: THE INVESTIGATION AND MODELING OF THE ENZYMATIC HYDROLYSIS OF LACTOSE

PRESENT IN MILK

In the experimental study on the enzymatic reaction, the effect of time (t, minute) and enzyme
concentration (E, mL/L) on lactose concentration (C, g /L) was investigated. The following model
equations were obtained for the variation of lactose concentration with time and enzyme
concentration.
𝐶(𝑡) = 40.812 − 0.8729𝑡 and 𝐶(𝐸) = 40 exp(−2.85𝐸) + 6
Accordingly, calculate the enzyme concentration used in the samples taken at 5, 15, 20 and 25 minutes.

EXPERIMENT 6: SAPONIFICATION REACTION OF ETHYL ACETATE

An engineer examines the conversion rate of ethyl acetate in the reaction with sodium hydroxide by
using by back titration method. The solution used in titration is 0.05 M caustic soda (sodium
hydroxide). The initial ethyl acetate and caustic soda concentrations are 0.1 M. Sample flasks contain
phenolphtalein indicator and 20 mL 0.1 M hydrochloric acid.

From the beginning of the reaction, 20 mL samples were taken from the reaction vessel at intervals of
two minutes and added to the sample flasks. The prepared samples were titrated with sodium
hydroxide. The consumption values for NaOH read from the burette as a result of the titration are
given in the table below.

a) For this reaction, choose a limited component and determine how conversion changes with time.
b) Find the residence time in reactor for 70% conversion.

2 4 12.4

EXPERIMENT 7: LIQUID – LIQUID EXTRACTION

Although benzene and water are almost insoluble in each others, ethanol is soluble in these two
solvents in any ratio and these three liquids give partially miscible two liquid phase. The compositions
of the S1 and S2 phases in equilibrium with each other at 1 atm and 20 °C are given below as mass
fraction.

S1 PHASE (wt%) S2 PHASE (wt%)

Ethanol Benzene Ethanol Water
1.61 97.14 28.07 71.83
8.55 88.63 48.09 45.00
12.77 83.92 51.54 32.62
19.14 75.48 46.80 21.53
22.34 72.49 45.49 18.99
25.85 67.94 41.79 13.50

Benzene-Ethanol solution containing 40% (wt) ethanol will be extracted by pure water. The percentage
of ethanol in the mixture is 28%. After the extraction process, two phases in equilibrium are obtained.
The benzene-rich phase (352.27 kg) contains 22.34% (wt) ethanol.

a) In this case, calculate the amount of the feed solution and carrier solvent.
b) Calculate the extraction yield.

EXPERIMENT 8: SOLID-LIQUID EXTRACTION

In the solid-liquid extraction experiment to obtain almond oil,

There are 29.4 g almonds (with a moisture content of 17.6%) to be fed into the system. The volume of the
hexane used as solvent in the experiment is 260 ml. After carrying extraction process, the downstream is
dried and the difference between the first and last weighing is 56.94 g. Since it is known that the bottom
stream loses 80% of its weight and there is no solid matter in the extract phase,
a) ………… ml of solvent was recovered after extraction. (isolated system)
b) On a dry basis, the extracted oil weight percentage is ....…………%.
c) The oil remaining in the downstream ………g and extraction yield is …..............%.
(ρhexane; 0.659 g/mL, almond oil content in dry solid feed 54.2% (g / g))
