The first known Catholic Mass in the Philippines was held on Easter Sunday, March 31,
1521. It was led by Father Pedro de Valderrama of Ferdinand Magellan's voyage along
the coastlines of what was described to in Antonio Pigafetta's journals as "Mazaua,"
which is now generally acknowledged by many historians and the government to be
Limasawa off the point of Southern Leyte. However, until at least the 19th century, it was
widely assumed that the first mass was celebrated in Butuan.

2. Who were the 2 missionary priests that had a strong influence on the claim that the first

The one who greatly influenced historians in the 17th to 19th to recognize Masao (in
Butuan) generally called Butuan Tradition, as the site of the first mass in the Philippines

historians accepted Butuan tradition.

The pro-Limasawa group rejected the claim that Masawa Butuan was the location of the
first mass protest against the panel, led by prominent historian Resil B. Mojares, which
was founded in 2018 to further investigate ongoing claims in favor of Butuan.

de Travera and Pablo Pastells were among the first scholars to investigate the 1521
Easter Sunday mass, and both determined that it was celebrated in Limasawa. The
panel also looked at several sources, such as the coordinates of Mazaua provided by
eyewitnesses, as well as studies and projects that used current navigational instruments
to retrace the Magellan-Elcano voyage.

panel of historians' proposal that the 1521 Easter Sunday Mass in the Philippines took
place at Limasawa, today located in Southern Leyte.
