THE ORIGINAL GAMES
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons
Also known as 1e. The original, expanded
ruleset D&D. Considered OSR up to/including
2e.
Dungeons and Dragons B/X
The original, rules-light D&D. Arguably the
most emulated edition.
Gamma World
A post-apocalyptic, science fantasy RPG
focusing on artifacts and mutations as opposed
to treasure and magic. Compatible with AD&D
using rules from the 1e Dungeon Master’s
Guide.
OD&D
The one that started it all. Known as the Little
Brown Books (LBB) or 0e.
Rules Cyclopedia
Collects every expanded B/X class and
supplement into a cohesive, one-book ruleset.
POPULAR RETROCLONES
Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of
Hyperborea
Similar to 1e with a focus on Robert E.
Howard’s setting. Contains no demihumans.
Adventure Conqueror King
Similar to 1e and has expanded rules for
domain-level play. Has race/class separation by
including specialized racial classes.
Basic Fantasy RPG
Bridges aspects of B/X and AD&D. Uses
ascending armor and has race/class separation.
B/X Essentials/Old School Essentials
A concise, multi-booklet breakdown of the
original B/X ruleset. Recently merged into one
book and renamed Old School Essentials.
Labyrinth Lord
Nearly identical to B/X, with minor changes.
It’s Advanced Edition Companion expands the
rules into 1e territory with race/class separation
and new classes.
Lamentations of the Flame Princess
Similar to B/X with an implied, weird-fantasy-
horror setting of 1600s Europe. Uses ascending
armor and a slot based encumbrance system.
Mutant Future
Essentially a mashup of the Gamma World and
Labyrinth Lord rulesets. Aims for a gonzo,
post-apocalyptic setting.
Stars Without Number
Arguably the most popular science-fiction
retroclone. Resembles a merge of B/X and
Traveller and uses an expanded skill system.
Swords & Wizardry
The White Box edition is mechanically similar
to OD&D. It’s Complete edition expands the
game into Rules Cyclopedia territory.
White Box
Mechanically similar to OD&D but with a
cleaner layout and optional rules, such as a
Thief class and ascending armor.
This barely scratches the surface of retroclones
available or the variety of themes. Others include
Silent Legions (Lovecraftian), Wolfpacks and
Winter Snow (Neolithic), Ruinations (Post-
Apocalyptic), Dark Places & Demogorgons (80’s
Horror), and more.
 ‘FALSE OSR’ GAMES

The Black Hack ‘False OSR’ refers to games that are loosely

Rules-light systems for quick play. Knave moves

emphasize “dump stats.” Classes are defined by
their equipment carried.
