What is force?

A force is a push or pull on an object caused by the interaction of an object with another object. Every
time two objects interact, a force is exerted on each of them. The two objects no longer experience the
force after the interaction ends. Interaction is the only way for forces to exist.

Contact Force

There are two categories of force: contact and non-contact force. But we will talk about contact force.

Contact force is the type of force that occurs when two interacting objects are considered to be
physically contacting each other.

Types of contact force

There are several types of contact forces but I will show five of them.

Friction Force is a force that resists motion; caused by the interaction between the surfaces in contact,
resulting in resistance to the object’s motion.

Ex. Writing - When the tip of the pen makes contact with the paper's surface, a frictional force is
created. When writing with a ballpoint pen, rolling friction is present, whereas when writing with a
pencil, sliding friction is present.

Normal Force is a force experienced by an object lying on a surface; also described as a support force
that is always perpendicular to a surface.

Ex. Book on a table - The normal force prevents a book from falling through a table when it is placed on
it. Gravity is pulling the book downward, but since it isn't falling, someone is pushing it upward.

Applied force is a force exerted by a person or another object. A push, pull, or drag force can be applied.
The relative direction of the force acting on the item determines the object's final direction.

Ex. Water dispenser - Certain water dispensers only dispense water when the button is constantly
pressed. The consumer's pushing force is used to keep the button in place. The dispensing mechanism is
turned off whenever the force is withdrawn.

Air and water resistance is an oppositely directed force experienced by an object moving in air
(aerodynamic drag) and water (hydrodynamic drag).
Ex. Paper plane- A properly constructed paper plane floats smoothly in the air. The sharp edge aids the
paper plane in cutting through the air and avoiding the force of air resistance. This aids the plane's
smooth and rapid movement.

Tension force is a force associated with objects pulled in opposite directions; usually linked with strings,
ropes, or wires.

Ex. The force contained in a rope when a pull force is applied from both ends is the tension force. In the
absence of tension force, no one would be able to win the game.
