1
Introduction

 Concrete is composite construction material,

generally composing of cement, aggregate and
sand.

 Concrete is used for structures either by cast in-

situ or pre-cast.

 The main types are mass concrete and

reinforced concrete.

2
Introduction

Typical Activities – Cast In-Situ

 Fixing of formwork and falsework.

 Fixing of reinforcement bars.

 Placing or pouring and compacting of concrete.

 Curing of concrete.

 Removal of formwork and falsework.

3
Typical Hazards

Fixing of Formwork and Falsework

 Collapse of formwork and
other temporary structures.

 Slips, trips and falls from

height.
 Abrasions, strains and pains.

4
Typical Hazards

Fixing of Reinforcement Bars

 Cuts.

 Slips, trips and falls from height.

 Abrasions, strains and pains.

5
Typical Hazards

Placing or Pouring and Compacting of Concrete

poor lifting operation

 Slips, trips and falls from

height.

 Violent ejection of concrete

from pump or bucket.

6
Typical Hazards

Placing or Pouring and Compacting of Concrete

 Strains and pains during
shovelling and screeding.

 Wet concrete splashes into eyes.

 Noise and vibration from
machinery.

 Skin rash/allergic dermatitis.

7
Typical Hazards

Curing of Concrete

 Slips, trips and falls from height.

8
Typical Hazards

Removal of Formwork and Falsework

 Collapse of structure due to pre-
mature dismantling.

 Struck by formwork components.

 Slip, trips and falls from height.

 Punctures – protruding nails or

sharp objects.

9
General Control Measures

Planning and Preparation

 Approved designs and drawings for formwork

and falsework.

 Conduct HIRARC/JSA.

 Approved method of statement.

10
General Control Measures

Planning and Preparation

 Adequate materials, tools and equipment.

 Valid COF and COC for certificated machinery.

 Brief workers and provide appropriate PPE.

11
General Control Measures

Fixing of Formwork and Falsework

 Safe means of access and

egress.

 Workers are wearing and

using PPE.

 Continuously check stability of

structure.
12
General Control Measures

Fixing of Reinforcement Bars

 Lifting operations performed by

competent operator and signal

man.

 Heavy bars lifted by a number of

workers.

 Use timber plank to walk on fixed

reinforcement.
13
General Control Measures

Placing or Pouring and Compacting of Concrete

 Formwork and falsework
were inspected and
approved for concreting.

 Workers are wearing PPE.

 Safe means of access and edge

14
General Control Measures

Placing or Pouring and Compacting of Concrete

 Use timber planks to walk on fixed
reinforcement.

 Floor edges and openings are covered and

protected.

 Lifting operations performed by competent

operator and signal man.

15
General Control Measures

Placing or Pouring and Compacting of Concrete

 Do not release concrete from hose or bucket

rapidly.

 Concrete spillages removed immediately.

 Machine on platform in particular vibrators are

secured.

16
General Control Measures

Placing or Pouring and Compacting of Concrete

 Alternate operators for use of vibrator.

 Alternate workers for shovelling and screeding.

 Continuously check stability of falsework and

formwork.

General Control Measures

Curing of Concrete

 Floor edges and openings are protected.

18
General Control Measures

Removing of Formwork and Falsework

 Ensure concrete has matured according to
specification.

 PTW for work is issued prior to removing of

formwork and falsework.

 Workers wearing PPE.

 Work area to be prohibited to others not involve.

 Remove in sequence.

 Protruding nails are removed or bent.

 Dismantled materials are properly stacked and

remove from work.
