GOOD DAY I AM NORHAINA B. AMIN YOUR STUDENT NURSE.

TODAY I’LL BE TEACHING YOU HOW TO DO DEEP BREATHING

EXERCISE. DEEP BREATHING EXERCISE HELPS STRENGTHEN
YOUR DIAPHRAGM. THE PURPOSE IS TO INCREASED SUPPLY
OXYGEN TO THE BODY, MUSCLES GET RELAXATION, AND TO
MOBILIZE AND REMOVE SECRETIONS.

HELLO MS HAINA. HOW ARE YOU TODAY? MY NAME IS

NORHAINA YOUR NURSING ASSISTANT, TODAY I AM GOING
TO TEACH ABOUT YOUR DEEP BREATHING EXERCISE WHICH
ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO DO TO KEEP YOUR LUNGS CLEAR.

WE’LL START BY HAVING YOU SIT UP NICE AND STRAIGHT.

NOW WHAT I’D LIKE YOU TO DO IS TAKE A DEEP BREATH IN
THROUGH YOUR NOSE AND OUT THROUGH PURSED LIPS,
LIKE THIS (DO THE THING) SO AS YOU TAKE BREATH IN, I’D
LIKE YOUR RIBS TO EXPAND SIDEWAYS AS YOUR LUNGS FILL
UP WITH AIR. DO IT FOR TWO MORE TIMES

NOW WHEN YOU TAKE A DEEP BREATH IN, I’D LIKE YOU TO
HOLD IT FOR A COUNT OF THREE, AND THEN SLOWLY
EXHALE (SOMETHING LIKE THIS) TWO TIMES.

FOR COPD TEACH THE DOUBLE COUGH TECHNIQUE. BREATH

IN THROUGH THE NOSE THEN EXHALE AND COUGH FOR TWO
TIMES

APICAL EXPANSION EXERCISES 1. Place your fingers below

the patient’s clavicles and exert moderate pressure, or have
the client place his or her fingers over the same area. 2.
Instruct the patient to inhale through the nose and to
concentrate on pushing the upper chest upward and forward
against the fingers. 3. Have the patient hold the inhalation for a
few seconds. 4. Have the patient exhale through the mouth or
nose slowly, quietly and passively while concentrating on
moving the upper chest inward and downward
BASAL EXPANSION EXERCISES 1. Place the palms of your
hands in the area of the lower ribs along the mid-axillary lines,
and exert moderate pressure, or have the patient place his or
her hands over the same areas. 2. Instruct the patient to inhale
through the nose and to concentrate on moving the lower
chest outward against the hands. 3. Have the patient hold the
inhalation for a few seconds. 4. Have the patient exhale
through the nose or mouth slowly, quietly and passively.

IInstruct the patient to perform this exercise at least five

respirations four times a day
