When hazards strike, there must be a disaster response, working within the confines of limited

funding, resources, ability, and time to prevent the onset of a catastrophe. Response functions
includes actions taken before, during, and immediately after a hazard event aimed at limiting
injuries, loss of life, damage to property and environment. Moreover, the processes of response
begin as soon as it becomes apparent that a hazard event is imminent and lasts until the emergency
is over.

Response actions has many ways. The first example presents Warning and evacuation. It requires
technology to detect the hazard. It has been very commonplace in the recent years especially in the
United States. For example, Hurricane Florence was one of the most disruptive disasters in Carolina.
43 people died, and the Carolina’s flooded in September’2016. Because of this, the US had an early
warning system that target the populations at risk, who are the recipients, planning, and conducting
of routine tests. Moreover, their plan of response includes identifying evacuation places and
developing maps on almost every street. According to the United States Agency International
Development, the aim of the warning & evacuation system is to minimize injury, death, and property
damage.

The second example is about the provision of the basic needs. Food and water must be shipped to
the victims. For example, the 2017 Harvey Hurricane in the US was one of the worst on record. It
inflicted significant damage. More than 30 food banks were impacted by the hurricanes. As a result,
The Feeding America network and disaster relief partners stepped up in response. Food bank staff
worked around the clock for weeks to meet the needs of their communities while also struggling
with their own personal losses. However, they succeeded on delivering more than 100 million
pounds of food, water, and supplies to devastated communities at the end of 2017.

Furthermore, another example is about India’s respond to the worst flooding in a century. Many
consequences occurred just like one million people displaced and 400 deaths in Kerala, India on
August’2018. Buildings, bridges, homes, and people have been swept away. Even cars, crops, and
livestock have been submerged. The most important point that many people loss their home. So, the
government immediately started taking up the required measures to provide shelters for homeless
people such as equipping public facilities for the citizens and building new houses. Also, by choosing
an appropriate and safe area and setting up more than 1500 tents and camps there.

Finally, On March 2011, a huge earthquake hit the north eastern of Japan causing massive losses.
The damage to medical institutions from the disaster was considerable. Ten hospitals were either
completely destroyed or burned down, and another 581 hospitals were partially damaged. In
response to this, Japan Society of Health Information Management sent Medical and public health
teams around the country, including many different specialists, medical and mental health care, and
activities to prevent infectious diseases. Moreover, they have provided beds for the hospitals,
medical supplies, and many types of medicine for people in need.
