To find out whether there is a significant difference (using a .05 level of significance) in
the performance of two sections of BPA students, eight students were taken as samples
from each section with their weighted average grades as follows:

1. Ho: There is no significant difference in the performance between students in

sections A and B.
Ha: There is a significant difference in the performance between students in
sections A and B.
2. Test Statistic: t-test for independent samples
3. Critical value of t using a two-tailed test at 0.05 level is 2.145 (df = 8+8-2 = 14)

5. Decision: Do not reject HO since -7.45 is less than 2.145

Conclusion: Therefore, there is no significant difference in the performance between
students in sections A and B.

7. A pharmaceutical company wants to test the effectiveness of a new vitamin syrup

in increasing the body weight of children in a local government unit. A sample of 8
children were taken and the results after 3 months were recorded. At .01 level, can
we say that the new vitamin syrup is effective?

1. Ho: µ = 0 (There is no significant difference in the mean weight before and

the mean weight after the vitamin syrup were taken in.)
Ha: µ ≠ 0 (There is a significant difference in the mean weight before and the
mean weight after the vitamin syrup were taken in.)

3. Critical value of t using a two-tailed test at 0.05 level is 3.499. (df = 8-1 = 7)
