CAVITE MUTINY

The Cavite Mutiny is documented in two versions: Spanish and Filipino. Dr. Trinidad H.
Pardo de Tavera's and Jose Montero y Vidal's accounts. The two historians' points of view sparked
a debate: was the Cavite Mutiny a vast conspiracy to topple the Spanish government in the
Philippines, or was it simply a labor dispute? The first version was the 1872 Cavite Mutiny, and the
second was the martyrdom of Fathers Mariano Gomes, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, who were
three martyr priests (GOMBURZA).

Cavite Mutiny, I believe is a Grand Conspiracy that deals with the Spanish interpretation or
perspective. Even though I am aware that the elimination of the privileges enjoyed by the Cavite
Arsenal laborers of exemption from tribute was the cause of the insurgency, if we analyze or review
it carefully, we must look at the larger views of contents and not just one argument that the Cavite
mutiny is solely due to a labor issue; this is a simple and weak argument that leads to a widespread
Filipino uprising. The Polos Y Servicios were also mentioned as a motivation for the Cavite Mutiny,
but is there any evidence that the Polos Y Servicios were present before the Spaniards arrived?
Finally, the GOMBURZA were hanged not because of a labor dispute, but because they were
accused of being the masterminds of the Cavite Mutiny. It's a big conspiracy because the
GOMBURZAs were found guilty by the fiscal when they were the defendants. However, the
prosecutor used Gov. Izquierdo's interpretations, based on Izquierdo's report, that the three priests
were the cause of the mass rebellion due to the dissemination of the events. That is why
GOMBURZA was blamed for the Cavite Mutiny, therefore if we evaluate it, the labor issue is not a
good justification for why the Cavite Mutiny happened or occurred.

Not everyone was aware that alternative reports of the same event existed the 1872 Cavite
Mutiny and the martyrdom of Fathers Mariano Gomes, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, who were
three martyr priests (GOMBURZA). All Filipinos should be aware of all sides of the tale since it
led to another terrible yet significant chapter in our history, the execution of GOMBURZA, which
was a vital element in the emergence of nationalism among Filipinos.
