1. What are the differing arguments for and against the primary sources on the
First Cry of the Revolution?
The primary sources of this historic event are contradictory. The 3 main
accounts of the event were by Pio Valenzuela’s, Santiago Alvarez’s, an
Guillermo Masangkay’s. The account that is most influential is Valenzuela’s
account. Valenzuela has changed his narrative many times till his death. The
main topics argued are the date of the Cry, its location, and what exactly is
the “Cry”.
The cry may be taken literally as a shout of a slogan or taken conceptually as
an act to signify the start of the revolution or maybe both.
Some regarded the “cry” as the ripping of the cedulas while others regarded
it aas the first clash with the Civil Guards.
According to Xiao’s explanation, the Cry is not a singular event , but rather a
series of events that initiated the start of the Philippine Government and the
beginning of of the nationwide revolution.
2. What is the significance of the tearing of the cedulas? What did the cedulas
signify?
The cedulas are the tax receipts. It signified the slavery and/or allegiance to
Spain. So, in tearing them, it signifies that the Katipuneros are no longer
slaves to Spain and are now free men.
3. What are the differing arguments for and against the primary sources on the
events of the Cavite Mutiny?
There is are two perspectives inn this event: Spanish and Filipino. The
Spanish historian Montero that the mutiny of the Indios in Cavite were an
attempt to overthrow the Spanish Government. The Governor-general’s view
however is that the mutiny implicates the native clergy’s movements towards
secularization. Both agree on the origins of this mutiny with that being the
abolition of the privileges of natives working on the arsenals. The Filipinos'
perspective on the other hand had similar origins. However, the native clergy
were not involved in any way. The Spanish friars and the Governor-general
magnified this event and formulated a conspiracy in which it involved the
native clergies. As a result, the 3 priests Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora were
executed for a crime they didn’t commit. This event on 1872 ignited the first
sparks of the Philippine Revolution.
4. What is the significance of this event in the history of the 1896 Philippine
Revolution?
The most significant part of this event is the execution of the GOMBURZA.
These 3 martyrs ignited the revolution. Our national hero Jose Rizal, even
though still a boy, heard of this news and it inspired him to write his 2
famous books. These books( Noli Me Tangere & El Filibusterismo) in turn,
inspired the Andres Bonifacio, the father of the Philippine revolution.
