ACTIVITY 1
Go out and observe your surroundings and look for patterns that exist in objects, plants,
trees, buildings, etc. Take a photo of the pattern that catches your attention, describe the
pattern that you perceive and write a brief explanation how mathematics is embedded
in that arrangement. (Note: The teacher and the students may decide on the date of
submission of this activity).

This particular flower that bloomed in our front yard is one of

nature’s creatures which I perceive to have a pattern. Most
notably the number of their petals. This one has 5 petals.
The number of petals in different flowers are always the
following: 3,5,8,13,.. and so on. This sequence is known in
mathematics as the Fibonacci sequence. All flowers follow this
pattern in their petals. This simply proves that nature follows a numerical pattern. This fact
alone has increased significantly the importance of mathematics in one’s life, knowing that
numerical pattern patterns exist everywhere I look. Moreover, one will get to appreciate
mathematics more as it reveals the beauty of these patterns expressed in nature
