EDITORIAL CARTOONS
A. What is the historical context and perspective of the editorial cartoons?
The editorial cartoons were made during the 20-year reign of Pres. Ferdinand
Marcos. A time where he declared Martial Law to the whole Philippine nation. The
perspective on these cartoons is that of the Filipino people. Journalists who try to
expose Marcos’s schemes and the crimes he is committing to the Filipino people.
B. What is the basis for the declaration of martial law?
According to the cartoons, Marcos declared Martial Law for it will give him
unopposable power over all the people of the Philippines. No one can stand against
him without leaving unscathed. He used the looming threat of Communism in order
to declare it.
C. . How did the editorial cartoons reflect the temper of the times?
It is clearly shown how oppressive the government is in the cartoons. I think it is
safe to assume that the temper of the people at the time has reached the extent to
which one would consider starting a revolution. The message of the cartoons are so
creatively and explicitly made, in that sense, it does reflect the temper of the times
