Assignment-concept of Sets

Give the set implied by each of the following:

A. Given:
A= {1,3,5,7,9,11}, B = {even nos. less than 12},
C = {whole number between 6 and 12}, D= {prime numbers less than 13}
1. 2 є D  True, since the element 2 belongs to the given set D; it is a prime number and it
is less than 13
2. 12 є B  False, since the element 12 does not belong to the given set B ; 12 is an even
number but it is not less than 12
3. 6 is not an element of C  False, since the element 6 belongs to the given set C
4. 3 є sets A and D  True, since the element 3 belongs to the given set A and D
5. 7 is not an element of sets A, B and D  False, since element 7 belongs to given set A

B. Give elements in a roster form.

1. Set of all Dean’s lister in a university  D = {Baliza, Edica, Francisco, Canave}
2. Set of naughty students in the senior high school  S = {Alan, Bea, Che, Ian, Paul}
3. Set of primary numbers less than 100  N = { 2,3,5,7,11…100}
4. Set of factors of 36  F = {1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36}
5. Set of unknown variables  V = {x, y: x, y are unknown variables}

C. Use the rule method or set builder to specify the set given below:
(ex. B = {September, October, November, December}
Ans. B= {set of months ending with ber}
1. J = {January, June, July}  J = {set of months starting with letter j}
2. S = {1,4,9,16,25}  S = {set of first 5 square numbers}
3. D = {10,20,30,40,50, …,100}  D = {set of whole numbers divisible by 10 but not more
than 100}
Use roster or tabulation method to specify the set given below:
4. The days of the week  D = {monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday,
sunday}
5. The set of all letters in the word “expression”  L = {e, x, p, r, s, i, o, n}
6. The last ten letters of the alphabet  T = {q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z}
Sets A and B are defined by
A = {3, 5, 7, 8} and B = {x, y, z}
Answer by true or false
a) 3 ∈ A  True, since 3 belongs to given set A
b) 3 ∈ B  False, since 3 doesn't belong to given set B
c) x ∉ A  True, since x is not an element of A
d) z ∈ B  True, since z belongs to given set B
e) 8 ∈ B  False, since 8 is not an element of B
