R i

Rational Numbers Irrational Numbers

Q Q’

Integral Non-Integral
Z Z’

Whole nos Negative Integers

_
W Z

Natural Nos Zero

Zero → is neither positive nor negative

→ represents nothingness
→ uses 0 as the symbol
Natural Numbers (N)
→ Counting Numbers
→ N= {1, 2, 3,…}
→the smallest element is 1 and the biggest is positive
Infinity
Whole Numbers (W) = Z0 U N
W = {0, 1, 2, 3, …}
→ the smallest element is 0

Language of Sets
Set theory- is a branch of mathematics that studies sets
or the mathematical science of the infinite.
Introduced by Georg Cantor – a German
mathematician
Set- is a well-defined collection of objects.
Examples: a set of green leafy vegetables
a set of students enrolled in Math 101 with
EDP code 94676
2 ways in writing a set:
1. Listing Method/ Roster Method
→ elements in the set are enumerated
→ the cardinality of the set is finite
Cardinality
→ refers to the number of elements in the set
Example: A = {a,e,i,o,u} ; FINITE SET
A= {red, yellow, blue} ; FINITE SET
A= {1, 2, 3,…} ; INFINITE

2. Rule Method/Descriptive Method

→write a set by stating its criteria/condition/rule or
description
Examples: A = {vowels}
A = {primary colors}
A= {counting numbers}
A= {x/x ɛ N}
Classification of Sets according to its Cardinality as to:
I. FINITE SET- the number of its elements can be
assigned with a natural numbers
→ if it is possible to enumerate or count the elements
in the set
II. INFINITE SET
→ a set is infinite if it is impossible to enumerate its
elements
→ the cardinality of the set cannot be assigned with
any of the natural numbers
