Dear Sir or Madam

MOTIVATION LETTER

I am writing this motivation letter in relation to my Masters application at the University of

Jena. As a Bachelor graduate in Pharmacy coming from the respected University of Nigeria, my

latest goal is now to study a MSc in medical photonics  while further gaining experience and

cultural life in Germany.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, diseases are often difficult to diagnose leading to inaccurate diagnosis,

which can have serious consequences on a person's health. This can be improved with medical

photonics: to get a better diagnosis and to achieve a better therapy which will be beneficial to

patient and raises hope of modern medicine. Light plays an important role to this modern

medicine. My desire to study medical photonics comes from my hospital experience, when I

was doing a one year mandatory program in my country hospital. Diseases were often treated

broadly without narrowing to the specific course of the infection. This means patient were

usually given a broad spectrum of antibiotics or polypharmacy. But with modern photonics, I

will have a better understanding of the disease, which will help me get a better a diagnosis and

achieve a better therapy. With this technology, molecular details in cells and tissues can be

understood of which medical diagnosis can be established and therapeutic course and outcome

can be monitored.

The main feature of medical photonics that it excels is in the Optical technologies, which have

become a critical part of today's clinical medicine, both in diagnostics and therapy. Medical

research and clinical depends on its technical instrumentation.

Optical techniques using spectroscopic techniques, Fluorescence lifetime measurements,

Raman spectroscopy OCT all techniques are used for establishing a medical diagnosis and

therapy.

One thing in medical photonics that caught my attention and inspired me to apply for this

course is Optical Sensors and microfluidics which is used for monitoring of physiologic

parameters noninvasively, detecting ions and biologic molecules, ultrasensitive detection,

biospectroscopy, and optical diagnostics. Medical photonics also have elective courses, which

will allow me to focus in more depth on special topics of Medical Photonics. It also includes

exercises and practical training of student and research laboratories complement in all courses.

Jena is ranked among top University in Germany in 2020. It has an excellent studying condition

both research, teaching and can easily compete with bigger institutions. The town offers a

unique combination of beautiful scenery and a vibrant student culture and gives opportunity to

blend in with the German culture.

I am grateful for the given opportunity and time to review my motivation letter. In the

upcoming time, I will look forward to your reply and hope for a positive reaction.

Sincerely,

Akunne Olisaemeka Zikora
