Diseases have taken the lives of people I love. My uncle died of complications from
diabetes melitus, and my mother died of lung cancer afterwards. While these events
saddened me, they inspired me to seek a career to providing solutions to diseases es
pecially cancers. Patients’ quality of life has also grown as more targeted therapies have
reduced side effects and boosted patients’ ability to continue their normal lives while in t
reatment. Although great progress has and continues to be made in the fight against cance
r, this disease claims the lives of about 70,000 Nigerians annually. Despite cancer prese
nting vexing challenges, groundbreaking treatments for melanoma and chronic myelogen
ous leukemia have changed the landscape for some cancer treatments.
I am interested in developing and designing gene therapy that involves targeted anticancer
biopharmaceuticals, i.e monoclonal antibodies, non-antibody proteins, and small molecu
les for the treatment of cancer. But I would also be excited to explore vaccines used for pre
venting noninfectious diseases such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disease
s, and neurodegenerative diseases. This is why I am so excited about studying a Master Pro
gramme in Biopharmaceuticals at Uppsala University, where Prof. Lena Friberg et al, dem
onstrated the use of a PK/PD analysis of circulating biomarkers and their relationship to tu
mor response in atezolizumab-treated non-small cell lung cancer patients. During my man
datory National Service Youth Corp, I worked as a volunteer in my country state hospital i
n Abuja. There I had the opportunity to work with doctors and nurses, and to learn some
of the effects of cancer on a patient and the effects of chemotherapy first hand. The hospit
al has reinforced my desire to pursue an interest in cancer therapeutics, and has confirme
d my interest in biopharmaceutical
