READING
Students are starting their second book club!
They read the summary and the first few
pages of each of their book choices to get a
"taste". Students then ranked the books, and
finally the winner was announced! Clubs
gathered together to come up with a club
name, make a club poster, take a club picture,
and fill out their calendar to help keep track
of what pages they need to read for each
meeting. We also had our first book club
meeting today. Ask your student to tell you
what new book club book they're reading! "I like book clubs because I get to see what other

normal 12 year old boy, but he's a highly - Lydia
advanced robot. Cog makes a mistake and
ends up in a strange lab where scientists are
trying to study him. He wants to find his way WRITING
back home to his creator, Gina. We're excited
to follow Cog along his journey! Students continue to work on the design
portion of their list articles. Students are
working on adding text features, titles,
headings, a lead, numbered sections etc.
As students are designing, they are always
considering how their design and features
will draw the reader in. Students have also
been able to share with the class what
they've been working on after each
session. Classmates then asked follow-up
questions, and gave compliments about
their work.

After editing their article, students are

publishing their list article to Seesaw. Look
out for your child's recording of their
published article!
MATH
This week, students began learning strategies
for adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers.
For addition, students learned the partial-sums
and traditional methods. We learned that it is
very important to line up the digits correctly so
that you are adding the correct place values
together. Students also learned the counting-up
strategy for subtraction. Next week, we will try
out the expand-and-trade and traditional
methods for subtraction. We learn a variety of
strategies so that our mathematicians can find a
strategy that works best for them or the type of
problem they are working on.

Please check out the poster to the right, and

your child's work in their take home folder for
examples of these strategies. Ask your child
which strategy they like best.

SCIENCE
In science, our explorations of hot and cold
water continued as third graders carefully
lowered vials of colored hot and cold water
into room temperature water. When the hot
water floated and the cold water sank, they
figured out that water changes in density as
temperatures changed. Next we asked, “How
does water change when it gets really cold?”
We filled vials and syringes with water and
put them in the freezer. Next week we will
observe the results and continue with more
experiments involving ice and water so third
grade scientists can continue to make sense
of the important concept of mass, volume
and density.
