A constitution refers to a system of laws , principles that act as the basis for governance in a
country. There are two types of constitutions. That is;

a. Written constitution and Unwritten constitution

Written constitution is a constitution that has been systematically and meticulously written
down and embodied in a country whiles Unwritten constitution is a constitution in which no
provisions or laws of the constitution are set in writing but they are documented despite not
being incorporated in a single book.

The differences between written constitution and unwritten constitution are as follows;

1. Written constitution refers to the constitution codified and compiled in a structured and
cohesive manner meanwhile Unwritten constitution refers to the constitution not codified
in a structured manner.
2. Written constitution have been property framed and compiled in a step by step matter
with any subsequent changes being added almost instantaneously while Unwritten
constitution evolves over a long period of time with a new set of laws and guidelines
being added as time progresses.
3. Written constitution is formulated is formulated by a constituent assembly formed for this
purpose only and also by laws passed by the parliament while Unwritten constitution
fundamentals often takes the form of customs , usage , precedent and variety of statutes
and legal instruments.
4. In the written constitution the Judiciary has more power in order to ensure constitutional
supremacy whiles under unwritten constitution the Judiciary has limited power.
5. The constitution is supreme in a country under written constitutional rule while the
parliament is supreme in a country where there is an unwritten constitutional rule.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, a written constitution is indeed a revolutionary way of setting out and


clarifying the rules and regulations of a state. Countries like India , USA , France , Australia ,
Denmark , Brazil practice written constitution.

Unwritten constitution consists of principles of government that have never been enacted in
the form of laws. It is precise , definite and systematic and results in conscious and deliberate
efforts of the people. The UK , New Zealand , Israel are the only three countries in the world
to have an uncodified or unwritten constitution.
