First-Order Butterworth Low Pass Filter

•Voltage ‘Vin’ as an input voltage signal which is analog in nature.

•Voltage ‘Vo’ is the output voltage of the operational amplifier.
•Resistors ‘RF’ and ‘R1’ are the negative feedback resistors of the operational
amplifier.
•There is a single R-C network (marked in the red square) present in the circuit
hence the filter is a first-order low pass filter
•‘RL’ is the load resistance connected at the op-amp output.

•Voltage ‘Vin’ as an input voltage signal which is analog in nature.

•Voltage ‘Vo’ is the output voltage of the operational amplifier.
•Resistors ‘RF’ and ‘R1’ are the negative feedback resistors of the operational amplifier.
•There is a double R-C network (marked in a red square) present in the circuit hence the filter is a
second-order low pass filter.
•‘RL’ is the load resistance connected at the op-amp output.

Sample & Hold circuit

B.PONKARTHIKA/EEE/EEC/191EEC303T
55
UNIT-III
Sample & Hold Circuit is used to sample the given input signal and to
hold the sampled value. Sample and hold circuit is used to sample an analog
signal for a short interval of time in the range of 1 to 10µS and to hold on its
last sampled value until the input signal is sampled again. The holding period
may be from a few milliseconds to several seconds.

What is a DAC?

• A digital to analog converter (DAC) converts a digital signal to an analog

voltage or current output.

B.PONKARTHIKA/EEE/EEC/191EEC303T
61
UNIT-III
Advantages:
• Simple Construction/Analysis
• Fast Conversion
Disadvantages:
• Requires large range of resistors (2000:1 for 12-bit DAC) with
necessary high precision for low resistors
• Requires low switch resistances in transistors
• Can be expensive. Therefore, usually limited to 8-bit
resolution.

Advantages:
• Only two resistor values (R and 2R)
• Does not require high precision resistors
Disadvantage:
• Lower conversion speed than binary weighted DAC

Parallel Comparator (Flash) A/D Converter

• Simplest
possible A/D

• Fastest & most

FLASH A/D CONVERTER

B.PONKARTHIKA/EEE/EEC/191EEC303T
72
UNIT-III
Advantages:
• High speed as the conversion takes place simultaneously rather than sequentially.
• Typical conversion time is 100ns or less.
• Conversion time is limited only by the speed of the comparator and of the priority encoder.
• AMD 686A comparator & T1147 priority encoder , conversion delay of the order of 20ns can
be obtained.

Disadvantage:
• No.of comparators required almost doubles for each added bit.
• In general, the number of comparators required are 2𝑛 −1, where n is the desired
number of bits.

How many comparators are required for 4 bit ADC?

Successive Approximation A/D
Converter

• Uses a very efficient code search strategy to complete n bit conversion in just n clock
periods.
• An 8 bit converter require eight clock pulses to obtain a digital output.
• SAR to find the required value of each bit by trial and error method.

A1high input impedance buffer, A2 precision integrator and a voltage comparator.
The converter first integrates the analog input signal Va for a fixed duration of 2𝑛 clock
periods. Then it integrates an internal reference voltage VR of opposite polarity until the
integrator output is zero. The Number N of clock cycles required to return the integrator to
zero is proportional to the value of Va averaged over the integration period. Hence N
represents the desired output state.
