Loading Data Analysis and Solver in Excel

The Analysis ToolPak and Solver is a Microsoft Office Excel add-in (add-in: A
secondary program that provides custom commands or custom features to Excel)
program that is available when you install Microsoft Office or Excel. To use it in Excel,
however, you need to activate it first. For MAC users, you can follow the instructions as
well to see if the plug-in is available on your version, if not, there are instructions on how
to get it at the end of this document.

Data Analysis: Used for Regression, Descriptive Statistics (mean, median, mode, SD,
Variance, etc), Correlation (Matrix), Histograms, etc. – Used in both Stats I and II

MS Solver: Used for Linear Programming applications – Used in Stats II

Using this software is a great way to test your answers out in questions you are
doing in the book.

Instructions for Office 2003

1. Open Excel
2. Click on “Tools”
3. Go to “Add In”
4. Check the box “Analysis Toolpack”
5. The software will begin to load - If you get prompted that the Analysis ToolPak is
not currently installed on your computer, click Yes to install it (you may need
your office disks).
6. Once finished, close Excel.
7. Re-open excel, click on “Tools”, and “Data Analysis” will be at the bottom of the
drop down list.

Instructions for Office 2007

Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Excel Options.

Click Add-Ins, and then in the Manage box, select Excel Add-ins.

Click Go.

In the Add-Ins available box, select the Analysis ToolPak check box, and then click OK.

Tip: If Analysis ToolPak is not listed in the Add-Ins available box, click Browse to locate
it.

If you get prompted that the Analysis ToolPak is not currently installed on your
computer, click Yes to install it (you may need your office disks).

After you load the Analysis ToolPak, the Data Analysis command is available in the
Analysis group on the Data tab.

Once clicked, it will pull


up the Data Analysis
Window with all the
statistical tools and tests.

Instructions for Office 2010 and 2016 (Office 365)

Step 1: Click the “File” Menu and choose “Options”.

Click Add-Ins, and then in the Manage box, select Excel Add-ins.

Click Go.

In the Add-Ins available box, select the Analysis ToolPak check box, and then click OK.

Tip: If Analysis ToolPak is not listed in the Add-Ins available box, click Browse to locate
it.

After you load the Analysis ToolPak and Solver, the Data Analysis and Solver command
is available in the “Analysis” group on the “Data” tab.

Mac Users

Instructions for MAC

If the Data Analysis plug-in is not available on your MAC Excel, then you
will have to download a third party application in order to run it.

Office 2016 for Mac includes a version of excel that has data analysis. In addition, any
Mac user with Office 365 can also download it as part of their subscription.

Step 1: Go to Tools and click on Excel Add-Ins

Step 2: Click both Analysis Toolpak and Solver Add in.

Step 3: Click on the data ribbon and you will see Data Analysis and Solver on the right
side.

Data Analysis – MAC (If above does not work on your version)

If you are a Mac user and the version you have loaded on your computer does not support
Data Analysis, you as a student have access to MS Office through the university. Please
visit:

http://student.computing.yorku.ca/software/

This version of Excel will have the plugin available.
