3.4 Documentation
The Project Engineer will ensure that in date certification and relevant procedures, covering
all aspects of the project, are available on the DSV.
This section covers the setting out and installation of the tie in spoolpiece at the Dolphin
A platform.
Prior to the deployment of the spoolpiece the installed 24” pipeline will have been flooded
and final metrology completed.
The Dolphin A spool is constructed in two parts, Spoolpiece North and Spoolpiece South,
for subsequent connection on the seabed.
Spoolpiece North requires the final length adjustments to be carried out on deck prior to
deployment, these adjustments are dependant on the results from final metrology and are
described in more detail on sketch No. 03007 / 01.
The spoolpieces will arrive on the transit barge, spoolpiece North in three separate pieces
and spoolpiece South completed and fitted with lift clamps, ready for transferring to the
DSV deck for stowage. The individual pieces will be lifted onboard the Discovery in
readiness for final measurement , cutting and welding out to complete the spoolpiece
according to the metrology.
Further details of Metrology and spool make-up can be found in the relevant procedures.
Spoolpiece South , connecting into the existing jacket riser flange, will be the first
spoolpiece deployed and will be installed by means of a guide wire attached to a clump
weight at the outboard end. The spoolpiece will be deployed to the seabed and pulled in
to mate the flanges at the riser connection.
Spoolpiece North will then be deployed and installed by use of the pre-installed guide wire
at the spoolpiece South end and a flange catcher on the mating pipeline end.
Details of the guide wire follower and flange catcher may be found in the appendix to this
document.
- Spoolpiece South to have blind flanges , gaskets and existing stud bolts removed, If
fitted. Temporary flange protection is to be attached to protect the flange faces from
damage or contamination.
- Any seabed remedial works required as a result of ROV survey to be carried out .
( see contingency measures in section 5.0 )
- Spoolpiece North to be cut to length, all as described in sketch No. 03007 / 01, and
prepared for welding . If fitted, blind flanges , gaskets and existing stud bolts to be
removed. Temporary flange protection is to be attached to protect the flange faces from
damage or contamination.
- Individual sections of spoolpiece to be welded out, NDT carried out and pipe coating
repaired in work areas .
Lift clamps to be fitted, aligned and fully tightened all in accordance with the positions
and orientations quoted on the spoolpiece North rigging layout.
(Ref. Spoolpiece North Lift Rigging Layout Dwg. No. OCE-0184-002-01 )
- Guidewire follower / flange catcher bracket to be fitted to spoolpiece North, inboard end
.
(Ref. Dwg. No. OCE-0184-022-03)
- Confirm alignment of positioned clump weight and, if within tolerance, proceed to deploy
spool.
- ROV to be deployed to work location and carry out video survey of pipeline end, riser connection flange
and seabed along length of spool.
Note: ROV survey to pay particular attention to any damage to the pipeline end
connection, the jacket riser flange and any debris in the vicinity of the pipeline and the
proposed location of spool installations.
- Deploy divers to working depth, diver to check installation site for debris and clear as necessary.
- Deck crew and project engineer to check spoolpiece South rigging arrangement against rigging layout
drawing prior to subsea deployment.
- Guide wire, connected to CTW ,to be fitted through eye on follower bracket on spoolpiece South, outboard
end.
- Weights and light sticks to be attached to end of guidewire and approx 15m slack paid out from CTW.
- Pick up slack on rigging and ensure hook correctly positioned above load.
- Check each of the spoolpiece rigging lines for correct alignment under tension to ensure that the spool
- When the spoolpiece is clear of the seafastenings, continue picking up to clear all obstructions and slew
crane to deploy spool over side.
(Ref. Dwg. No. OCE-0184-003-02)
- Pay out guidewire and deploy diver to secure to attachments on clump weight.
- When the spoolpiece assembly is in the water, pick up any remaining slack in guide wire and engage
constant tension facility on winch .
- Divers to rig Tirfor line, from spoolpiece to Jacket, and pull spoolpiece flange in under
riser flange .
(see sketch No. 03007 / 04 for details of Tirfor rigging arrangement)
- Install flange puller to riser connection and bring spoolpiece end up to mate with riser
flange.
- Loose fit bolts and new oval gasket in readiness for tightening with bolt tensioning
equipment spread. All bolts to be hand tightened and flanges aligned with uniform gap.
- Deck crew and project engineer to check spoolpiece North rigging arrangement against
rigging layout drawing prior to subsea deployment.
- Guide wire, connected to CTW ,to be fitted through eye on follower bracket on
spoolpiece inboard end.
- Weights and light sticks to be attached to end of guidewire and approx 15m slack paid
out from CTW.
- Pick up slack on rigging and ensure hook correctly positioned above load.
- Check each of the spoolpiece North rigging lines for correct alignment under tension to
ensure that the spoolpiece will land on the seabed with a level orientation.
- When the spoolpiece is clear of the seafastenings, continue picking up to clear all
obstructions and slew crane to deploy spoolpiece over side.
(Ref. Dwg. No. OCE-0184-003-01)
- Pay out guidewire and deploy diver to secure to attachments on clump weight
previously deployed on the seabed
- When the spoolpiece assembly is in the water, pick up any remaining slack in guide
wire and engage constant tension facility in winch .
- Lower spoolpiece to within 10m of seabed. Deploy divers to each end of the spoolpiece.
- Divers to install flange puller to spoolpiece South connection and bring spoolpiece North
end in to mate. Should distance to flanges be too great for flange puller connection,
close distance by pulling in with Tirfor rig prior to attachment.
- Loose fit bolts and new oval gasket in readiness for tightening with bolt tensioning
equipment spread. All bolts to be hand tightened and flanges aligned with uniform gap.
- Repeat operations at outboard end to mate and connect the flanges of the spoolpiece
and pipeline.
- Deploy divers to remove each of the lift clamps, all clamps are fitted with M30 bolts
requiring a 46mm AF spanner set for removal.
- On completion of spoolpiece installation activities R.O.V. to perform and video "as built"
survey .
If the results of the survey indicate that seabed is high at riser location, provision must
be made for dredging the area local to the spoolpiece installation.
In dredging, sufficient clearance must be provided under the riser flange for the
spoolpiece flange to clear, when pulled in. In addition, depending on the depth to be
removed, dredging may be required along the installed line of the spoolpiece to prevent
hogging of the spoolpiece.
Where the seabed is cleared local to flanges for access purposes, reinstatement is to
be carried out at the completion of the works.
If the results of the survey indicate that seabed is low at riser location, provision must be
made for installing sandbags in the area local to the spoolpiece installation to enable the
spoolpiece flange to mate with the riser flange.
If the results of the survey indicate that the orientation of the pipeline is not suitable for
connection of the spoolpiece, provision must be made to correct the position of the pipeline.
In this instance it will be necessary to deploy the H Frame to move the pipeline to an
acceptable position, all in accordance with the “ Pipeline Moving Contingency
Procedure”.
