INTRODUCTION
The following procedure describes the work required to install protection covers to the 16”
and 24” side taps on the 24” Dolphin gas pipeline.
On completion of the installation of 24” Gas Pipeline (approx. 40 miles long) from the NGC
Platform to the Dolphin Platform by Allseas, SSOL shall mobilise the DSV Discovery to
install the 24” riser, riser guard , 3 No side tap protection covers and associated expansion
spools at the NGC and Dolphin platform.
1.3 Objectives
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that all parties are familiar with the scope of
work and that personnel are aware of their respective tasks and the essential interfaces
for a safe and efficient operation.
The procedure provides “step by step” details for performing the works.
Drawings and sketches are included to illustrate the works, and identify the sequence of
activities.
1.4 Responsibility
The Project Manager is responsible to the SSOL Operations Director for the completion of
the work.
On the DSV the Project Engineer will be responsible for the overall supervision of the
works, and ensuring that the installation is performed in accordance with the procedures.
He will be responsible for ensuring that all the project equipment is checked on mobilisation
and that the appropriate personnel are familiarised with its operation.
The Project Engineer will also be responsible for checking that all rigging equipment is
correctly installed and in date certification is available offshore in respect of all project
rigging and equipment. The certification will be available in the Mobilisation Manual, DOC
No: AB-D-MA-03004 which will be onboard the vessel.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Allseas have been contracted by British Gas Trinidad Ltd to fabricate and install a 24” gas
export pipeline from the Dolphin platform to the NGC platform, Offshore Trinidad.
SSOL have been contracted by Allseas to complete the following work along the proposed
pipeline route:-
- 1 off 24” riser, to be retro-fitted (with clamps and riser guard ) to the NGC
Platform
- 1 off 24” riser top, to be installed on the Dolphin Platform
- 1 off L-shaped spoolpiece to be installed at the NGC Platform
- 1 off Z-shaped spoolpiece to be installed at the Dolphin Platform
- 1 off 24” Side Tap protection structure to be installed over the pipeline
- 2 off 16” Side Tap protection structure to be installed over the pipeline
- Stabilisation of pipeline crossings and expansion spools using grout bags and
concrete mattresses
3.1 Introduction
This section references the safety aspects associated with the installation of side tap protection covers to be
carried out during this project.
Decisions on environmental conditions affecting operations defined by this procedure will be left to the
discretion of the Diving Superintendent and Vessel Master
Due consideration must be given to limitations due to weather, including tidal parameters and limited
visibility.
3.2.2 Rigging
The Project Engineer will ensure that all items of project rigging used throughout the
project are correctly specified and that the test certification is in date for the duration
of the project. Copies of all certificates are to be available on board in the
Mobilisation Manual.
3.2.3 Lifting
Prior to use the Project Engineer will check that all rigging equipment is correctly
installed and fit for purpose
3.3 Safety
All vessel personnel will comply with the safety requirements list in Document No. AB-V-
MA-00201 Marine Safety Manual CLDSV Discovery.
In addition the requirements of Document No. AB-S-PR-00046 , SSOL Project Safety plan,
will be implemented.
3.4 Documentation
The Project Engineer will ensure that in date certification and relevant procedures are
available on the DSV.
This section covers the setting out and installation of the protection covers over the side
taps on the 24” Dolphin gas pipeline.
Three protection covers are to be installed in total, one for the 24” side tap at the NGC
Platform, one for the 16” side tap at the Dolphin Platform and one for the 16” side tap
approximately midway on the pipeline .
The covers will arrive on the transit barge completely assembled in readiness for lifting
onboard the DSV Discovery. The lifting of the covers and their stowage on deck will be
carried out in a manner condusive to the subsequent order of deployment.
The first two covers are to be installed prior to all other installation works.
Installation of this cover will take place after the riser and spoolpieces are completed.
Initial location of the side tap protection covers will be guided by ROV.
Final positioning of the covers over the side taps will be by means of guide wires attached
to the pipeline and suspended by air bags at each end of the cover.
The description of installation herein will be for one cover, the sequence of events will then
be repeated for the remaining covers.
- ROV to be deployed to side tap location to survey landing area of cover relative to
pipeline level. Survey to cover the seabed levels at all areas of mudmat positions.
- Any remedial seabed works required as a result of ROV survey to be carried out
( see contingency measures in section 5.0 )
- Guide wires, complete with air bags, to be deployed and attached to pipeline at each
end of the cover location. Guide wires are to be positioned to align with the pre-fitted
brackets on the protection covers, details of which may be found in the appendix to this
procedure.
- Deploy divers to working depth, diver to check installation site for debris and clear as
necessary. (Working depths for each cover are indicated on the positioning sketch)
- Deck crew and project engineer to check protection cover rigging arrangement against
rigging layout drawing prior to subsea deployment.
- 5 Te air bags, previously fitted to the ends of the guide wires, to be inflated with
minimum air to lift wire .
- Pick up slack on rigging and ensure hook correctly positioned above load.
- Check each of the rigging lines for correct alignment under tension to ensure that the
protection cover will land on the seabed with a level orientation.
When the cover is clear of the seafastenings, continue picking up to clear all
obstructions and slew crane to deploy cover over side.
Details of the required clearances, hook heights and weights lifted are all contained in
Dwg. No. OCE-0184-040-02 in the appendix to this procedure.
- Whilst monitoring descent of the protection cover by ROV and verifying orientation,
lower cover to within 10m of seabed.
- Vessel to reposition to bring cover into correct location over side tap
See sketch 03010 / 01 for positioning at stage 2.
- Divers to engage guide wire followers, situated at the ends of the protection cover, with
tensioned guide wires to position cover over side tap assembly, and fully inflate the air
bags.(Ref. Dwg. No. OCE-0184-040-03 )
- Under diver supervision, lower cover to seabed utilising guide wires for correct
positioning over side tap. Divers to constantly observe clearances of cover to side tap
assembly.
- After deflating airbags, divers to disconnect guidewires from pipeline and retrieve to
deck.
- Guidewire follower brackets to be removed from protection cover and retrieved to deck.
- On completion of protection cover installation activities R.O.V. to perform and video "as
built" survey .
CONTINGENCY MEASURES
Prior to deployment of the side tap protection covers an ROV survey of the worksite is
to be conducted. Depending on the results of this survey certain remedial works may
have to be carried out to ensure correct alignment of the installed items.
These contingency actions are summarised below :
If the results of the survey indicate that seabed is high, relative to the pipeline, at each
location of the cover mudmats no provision for remedial works need be made.
If the results of the survey indicate that seabed is low at the location of the cover
mudmats, relative to the pipeline, provision must be made for installing sandbags in the
area local to the mudmat to enable the cover to retain sufficient clearances over the
installed pipeline side tap.
