WEEK 8

LET’S INITIATE!
Activity 1. Let us try to check your understanding of the topics. Write your
answers on the space provided below every after each question.

1. What is communism?

 A political and economic concept aimed at replacing private property and profit-based
economies with public ownership and communal management of a society's principal means of
production and natural resources.

2. What are the confrontations that happen between St. John Paul II and
communist government back in Poland?
 First, via his theological lectures about the dignity of the human being and the ills brought about
by the communist dictatorship, he ministered to young people. Second, he battles to get
authorization from Poland's communist authorities to build additional churches. Finally, he
insisted on having an annual march on the streets, which the communist administration refused
to allow.

3. Why did St. John Paul II oppose communism?

Because of the communist state's severe abuses and human rights breaches, Pope John Paul II
challenged the communist dictatorship. He had come to the conclusion that the struggle with
communism was fundamentally a spiritual conflict. Communism is unmistakably agnostic.

LET’S INQUIRE!
Activity 1. In this activity, you are required to expound your
answer to each of the questions below.

4. What are the impact of John Paul II’s election to the papacy?

 John Paul II was the first internationally focused pope, and he improved the papacy's
international standing. The new Pope maintained the lines of communication open while
pressuring communist governments to adhere to international human rights agreements. He
placed an unparalleled focus on religious and national liberty. He also upheld conventional
church attitudes on gender and sexual issues while centralizing authority over Catholic
educational institutions. Elections in June 1989 resulted in the establishment of a new Polish
government led by a non-communist prime minister as a consequence of those discussions. The
Berlin Wall came down in a few of months, and communist governments in Czechoslovakia and
Romania fell as well.

5. Why did the Soviet oppose the trip of St. John Paul to his homeland?

 The Kremlin had blocked the notion of letting one of its puppets in the Polish administration to
enter his own country. Edward Gierek, Poland's puppet-in-chief and leader of the Communist
Party, politely reminded his Kremlin string-puller that preventing such a visit was impossible.
Gierek tried to gently convince his employer that his suggestion would not be very effective,
while not recognizing the genius of Brezhnev's proposal. Brezhnev grudgingly granted his
approval, telling Gierek that his predecessor had been a "better communist." The Bolshevik
hesitated, yelling at his Polish underling that his predecessor had been a "better communist."

LET’S INFER!
Activity 1.
1. Kindly describe a scenario of a non-violent revolution.

 Ordinary citizens who dream of inclusive democracy in the face of harsh and authoritarian regimes lead
peaceful uprisings known as "people power." People may struggle for their rights, freedom, justice, and
self-determination without resorting to violence by using strategic nonviolent action. Strikes, boycotts,
mass protests, and other kinds of non-cooperation can all be used to achieve this goal. Nonviolent
resistance is not just a powerful tool for overthrowing tyrants; it may also aid in the consolidation of
democracy following the end of authoritarian authority. Everyone who wishes to join the peaceful army
has a place in it. There is no distinction in color. There is no test, no commitment, except that, just as a
soldier in a violent army is supposed to check and clean his carbine, nonviolent warriors are asked to
examine their most powerful weapons: their heart, conscience, bravery, and sense of justice.
