What does Pascal's law tell us about pressure in a hydraulic system?

Pascal's law says that pressure applied to an enclosed fluid will be transmitted without a
change in magnitude to every point of the fluid and to the walls of the container. The
pressure at any point in the fluid is equal in all directions.

Is hydraulic lift Pascal's law?

The principle for hydraulic lifts is based on Pascal's law for generating force or motion, which
states that pressure change on an incompressible liquid in a confined space is passed equally
throughout the liquid in all directions. Hydraulic lifts provide controlled and precision force.

Is hydraulic jack Boyle's Law or Pascal's law?

A hydraulic jack is based on Pascal's law, which states that the pressure in liquids acts equally in
all directions.

How the pressure is calculated in hydraulic jack?

its simple, the diameter of the RAM piston and the actuation load are two decisive factor of
pressure. As per standard (AS-anz2693) 360 N and 450N are permissible max effort on Handle
or Lever.

So the pressure would be, P = F/A

The Handle or lever has got leverage and can be calculated as

Fmax = Max permissible force X Length of lever (up to fulcrum)/ Distance between pivots
(generally 20 to 40mm)

A = pi*d2/4, where ‘d’ = dia of plunger

How do I calculate the capacity of a hydraulic jack?

Maximum load involving lever (handle) = F x A(t) [lbs]

A(t) = A(H) x A(M)

A(t)= Total Amplification Factor

A(H)= Hydraulic Amplification Factor,

A(M)= Mechanical Amplification Factor.

A(H) = Area of lifting cylinder ÷ Area of pumping cylinder

A(M) = Length of lever ÷ Distance from the pivot to the pumping piston

Considering F = 50 lbs (human force) for a standard use of bottle jack;

The bore of the lift cylinder is 2½ inches

The bore of the pump cylinder is ½ inch

The arm distance from the pivot to the pumping distance 1½ inch

The length of the lever handle is 10 inches.

Then A(H)= 25 , A(M) = 166.6

Capacity of bottle jack would be = 50 lbs x 25 x 166.6 = 8333.3 lbs.
