F Where did you go on your last holiday, Hana?

H Last year, I went to Japan. It was mainly a sightseeing holiday. I wanted
to see the temples in Kyoto and I really wanted to see Mount Fuji.
F Oh, really! How did you travel?
H Well, I flew from London to Tokyo. It was a direct flight which wasn’t too
bad. It took about eleven hours.
F And how about in Japan?
H I took the Shinkansen, the super express train, from Tokyo to Kyoto. It
was brilliant. It’s a 513 kilometre journey but it only took just over two
hours.
F I heard Kyoto’s really nice. How long did you stay there?
H I stayed in Kyoto for three days. I wanted to stay in traditional
accommodation so I booked a kind of Japanese bed and breakfast called a
ryokan. They serve traditional Japanese food and you sleep on a mattress
rather than a bed. It’s a great experience.
F And did you stay in Tokyo?
H Yes, I stayed there for two days. It was completely different from Kyoto.
It’s so big.
F Mmm. Where did you stay in Tokyo?
H I stayed in a very modern hotel on the top floor. I could see Mount Fuji
from my room. It was really exciting. It’s pretty scary trying to get around,
though – there are so many different trains. I took the subway most of the
time. People were so kind and showed me which train to get and
everything. The whole trip was fantastic.
F Yeah. It sounds great. I’ll have to go there myself some day.

What is your travel tip?
A couple of years ago I went on a round-the-
world trip with a friend. What an experience!

The
best bits were when we took local buses and
trains – you know the kind of thing. They stop
everywhere and it takes ages to get from A to B.
And that’s when you meet interesting people
and learn something about the place you’re in.
But I took far too much luggage with me – you
can’t carry it easily and you just worry about

losing it. Just take a small backpack with the

essentials. That’s my advice.

I haven’t travelled very much in the
last few years. I’ve been on a few day
trips and I’ve had a couple of
weekends away this year. I don’t go far
any
more. I’m more interested in the
place
I’m going to than in the journey.

But
in my experience, the key to a
good
trip is good planning. Don’t leave

anything to chance!

I work in IT and I travel a lot for my job – too much.

I spend a lot
of time on planes and in my car on the motorway,
travelling to
the projects I am involved with. I don’t particularly

enjoy it,
especially when there are delays, but it’s part of my job. About

twice a year, I have to go on business trips abroad. My travel tip?

Once you start your journey, take your watch off and relax. You
have no control over the time you arrive, so it’s pointless to get
stressed.
