Activity 1

For each pedigree,

1. Identify the mode of inheritance

2. Write down the genotypes of specific individuals
3. Compute for the probability of having an affected offspring

I.

A. Look at the family of IV-9 and IV-10. If the trait is dominant, is it possible for them to have an
affected offspring?
● No, since if the characteristic is dominant, unaffected people are homozygous recessive.
A dominant child cannot be produced by two recessive people.
B. If the trait is recessive, is it also possible for IV-9 and IV-10 to have an unaffected offspring?
● Yes, if both parents are heterozygous for the characteristic, they can give each other a
recessive gene to produce a homozygous recessive kid.
C. Based on your answers for A and B, is the trait dominant or recessive?
● Recessive
D. Give the genotypes of the following:
i. IV-9 - Dd
ii. IV-10 - Dd
iii. V-1 - DD
iv. I-1 - dd
v. I-2 - Dd
E. If IV-9 and IV-10 were to have another child, what is the probability that they will have an
affected offspring?
● 25% following the Mendelian ratio from a hybrid cross.
II.

A. Is this trait dominant or recessive?

● The trait is recessive. Individuals I-3 and I-4 are both homozygous recessive, meaning
they can't have dominant children if the trait were dominant.
B. What are the most probable genotypes of I-3 and I-4?
● Dd and Dd
C. What are the most probable genotypes of II-4 and II-5?
● Dd and Dd
D. What is the probability that II-4 and II-5 will have another normal offspring?
● 75% dominant offspring nad 25% recessive offspring.

III.

A. Is this trait dominant or recessive?

● Dominant
B. What are the most probable genotypes of I-2 and I-3?
● Dd and Dd
C. What is the probability that II-2 is Dd?
● 100%
D. What is the probability that II-1 and II-2 will have another normal offspring?
● 50% or 1/2

IV.

A. Is the trait dominant or recessive?

● Dominant
B. What are the genotypes of I-1 and I-2?\
● dd and dd because they are normal
C. What is the probability that I-1 and I-2 will have an affected offspring?
● None
D. What are the genotypes of I-3 and I-4?
● Dd and Dd
E. What is the probability that II-6 is Dd?

● ⅔ probability. Due to the factor that Dd x Dd has ¼ DD, 2/4 Dd, and ¼ dd so we assume
that II-6 has ⅔ probability because II-3 and II-4 have only 3 offsprings.

Activity 2

1. Construct a pedigree of an authentic family using any of the following traits:

ii. Normal (dominant) or hitchhiker’s thumb (recessive)

2. Where possible, determine the genotypes of every individual in the family.

CROSS Expected Genotype(s) Expected Phenotype(s)

1. DD x DD 100% DD 100% dominant

2. DD x Dd 50% DD, 50% Dd 100% Dominant

3. DD x dd 100% Dd 100% dominant

4. Dd x Dd 25%, DD, 50% Dd, 25% dd 75% dominant, 25% recessive

5. Dd x dd 50% Dd, 50% dd 50% dominant, 505 recessive
