I'm Pavani Sairam, a Cultural Anthropologist working in the developmental

and NGO sector for the past few years under the guidance of Sri R.A. Rao
garu, an 85 year old who has been involved in social service for the past five
decades.

His post retirement activities of the last 27 years, had a setback due to a
severe covid attack and consequent hospitalization in September 2020, but
by God's grace, he is now able to come back fully into his activities with
more energy than ever. He is also penning his autobiographical notes into a
book to map the iconic moments of his journey.

He traveled widely in India and abroad participating and Chairing some

national and international committees and conferences. Mr. Rao had the
opportunity to observe at close quarters, the disparities in living standards,
and the inequities between people, particularly injustices to vulnerable
groups. These concerns prompted him to take the step of leaving his well
paying and comfortable career midway, and moving with family to remote
villages in AP, for 3 years. This experience opened up his sights wider on the
scope for improving the lot of the poor and the disadvantaged, through
simple measures of enabling and empowering them, particularly the youth
and women, in uplifting themselves.

Born into a family of freedom fighters and service oriented persons in

November 1936 at Peddapuram in East Godavari District, Rayavarapu
Adinarayana Rao ( R. A. Rao ), could imbibe the value systems of his elders
in his formative years. After his Postgraduate Research Degree in Mechanical
Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1961, he had
a satisfying professional service in the country's emerging oil sector, rising to
senior management and Board level positions.
When Mr. Rao retired at the mandatory age of 58 in 1994, declining several
lucrative offers in the opened up Oil sector of the Economy, he chose to go
full time for voluntary activity focussing mainly on issues of gender bias,
rehabilitation of the disabled and disadvantaged, problems of adolescence
focussing on girl child. During this period, with his love for teaching and
research, he also used to work as guest faculty to some PG programs in IITs
and other Institutions of Higher Learning, as well as mentoring industry
engineers on environmental issues.

తమ పెద్దలు నేర్పిన విలువలను అనుసరిస్తూ వచ్చారు. 1961లో బెంగుళూరులోని ఇండియన్
ఇన్‌స్టిట్యూట్ ఆఫ్ సైన్స్ నుండి మెకానికల్ ఇంజినీరింగ్‌లో పో స్ట్ గ్రా డ్యుయేట్ రీసెర్చ్ డిగ్రీ పొ ందిన తరువాత,
‌ ెంట్ స్థా నాలలో పని చేస,ి బో ర్డు
దేశంలోని ఆయిల్ రంగంలోని పైస్థా యి మేనేజ్మ స్థా యి స్థా నాలకు
ఎదిగారు.

వృత్తి రీత్యా దేశ , విదేశాలలో పర్యటించి, ఎన్నో జాతీయ మరియు అంతర్జా తీయ కమిటీలకు, సమావేశాలకు
అధ్యక్షత వహించారు. విదేశీయానం చేసిన ప్రతిసారీ అక్కడ ఉన్న భోగ భాగ్యాలు చూసి, మన దేశంలోని
దుస్థితులు గుర్తు కువచ్చి వ్యాకులపడేవారు. సేవ చేయాలనే తపన ఆయనను తపింపచేసేద.ి అందువలన
దేశంలో ఎంతో ప్రముఖమైన ఉద్యోగాలను కూడా మధ్యలోనే వదిలివేస,ి కుటుంబంతో కలిసి 3 సంవత్సరాల
పాటు ఆంధ్ర రాష్ట ం్ర లోని భాగవతులా చారిటబుల్ ట్రస్ట్ వారితో కలిసి మారుమూల గ్రా మాలకు వెళ్లి సేవ
చేయాలని పూనుకున్నారు. అణగారిన వర్గా లు ఎదుర్కునే అసమానతలను, అన్యాయాలను క్షుణ్ణ ంగా
తెలుసుకున్నారు. అటుపై కార్పొరేట్ సంస్థ ల్లో ఉన్నతోధికారిగా మరలా చేరినా, సేవా కార్యక్రమాలు
కొనసాగిస్తూ నే ఉన్నారు.
1994లో 58 సంవత్సరాలకు పదవీ విరమణ చేసాకా ప్రైవేటు రంగం నుండి వచ్చిన అనేక ఆఫర్ల ను వద్ద ని,
సమాజ శ్రేయస్సుకై గత 27 సంవత్సరాలూ అధిక సమయం కేటాయించారు. బో ధన, పరిశోధనపై ఉన్న
ప్రేమతో, IITల వంటి ఉన్నత విద్యా సంస్థ లలో PG ప్రో గ్రా మ్‌లకు గెస్ట్ లెక్చరర్గా ఉన్నారు. వికలాంగులు
మరియూ వీధి బాలుర పునరావాసం కలిగించే ఒక సంస్థ లను స్థా పించి సహాయ సహకారాలు చేస్తూ
వస్తు న్నారు. ఎన్నో అసాధారణమైన అభివృద్ధి కార్యక్రమాలలో యువత, మహిళలు తమను తామే
ఉధ్ధ రించుకునే విధంగా వినూత్నమైన ప్రా జెక్టు లను రూపకల్పన చేశారు. గ్రా మీణాభివృద్ధి, కౌమార బాలికల

ఆయనలో ఉన్న దృఢ సంకల్పం, దేవుడి కృప వలన ఎంతో తీవ్రంగా వచ్చ్చిన కోవిడ్ వ్యాధిని జయించి
ఇప్పుడు మరోసారి తమ కార్యకలాపాల్లో కి తిరిగి రాగలిగారు.
