You : How old are you?

New UK Friend : (looks at you, then look away) well, mmm...
You : I mean, should I call you Miss or sister or Ma’am or what?
New UK Friend : Oh, I see what are you mean. Just call me Eileen.

How do you feel?

Why doesn’t UK friend tell you her age?
Maybe he feels his privacy
Maybe he feels a bit offended
Maybe he feels impolite

Why do you want or need to kow her age?

Maybe when we know someone's age we'll know how to behave with that person
Maybe the person who asked the question was just curious

b. Waving

Why does your canadian friend not wave at the teenagers immediately?
Maybe he's confused

Maybe to a friend

I feel ignored, because usually people will answer that question.

Maybe it's look expensive.

Maybe he/she think everyone has known the price of the item.
Maybe that was a gift.
Maybe he has sprue.

d. Chatting

You are having coffe with friends, an English-speaking coupple.

Brazilian man : (loud voice, fast, high pitched) Why’d you do that?
Greek woman (his wife) : What? Stop it.
Brazilian man : I won’t. Why?

How do you feel?

I get annoyed, because they paying attention of the people around them and make the
awkward situation when people start whispering.
 What is going on between the man and his wife?
Maybe he just get betrayed by his wife.
Maybe his wife just took his coffee without permission.
Maybe his wife talked to another man and he got jealous.

What does a fast answer or a high-pitched voice mean in your culture?

Maybe when people get angry with you.
Maybe when we feel offended.

How do you feel?

I feel offended cause why she looks away and doesn't answer.

Why do you think she isn't answering?

- Maybe he felt it was a privacy

- Maybe I just want to chit chat

I feel touched. I would thank them for their hospitality, Even i might not be able to
drink them cause i’m not allowed to do that.

Why did your friends bring the wine?

Maybe it was their behaviour to drink wine after/before dinner

What do they expect you to do with the wine?

Maybe we could have fun and drink the wine together
Maybe take pictures and post them on social media

Maybe due to the fact that the wine was expensive

European woman: (looks around)
You : Can I practice English with you?
European woman : (looks at you and then walks away quickly)

How do you feel?

A little bit depressed.

Why does the European woman not reply?

Maybe she thinks i am a weird person
Maybe she thinks i am playing around with her
Maybe she is such in rush.

What does your greeting mean?

Maybe to get her attention
Maybe she looks like her in a middle age
Maybe trying not confuse people around me.
i. Letters
An English-speaking student is staying in your house for six weeks on an exchange
program. Some letters arrive for her while she is at school. You open and read them.
When she comes home, she notices the opened letters, and she starts shouting at you.

How do you feel?

At first I will be shocked, and then I will feel guilty

opening the windows.

I will feel awkward and embarrassed

Why are the foreigners surprised?

Maybe they can't stand cigarette smoke

Maybe not their culture, smoking in public places

Why do you feel awkward and embarrassed?

Maybe I finally realized, that I did the wrong thing
