New UK Friend : (looks at you, then look away) well, mmm...
You : I mean, should I call you Miss or sister or Ma’am or what?
New UK Friend : Oh, I see what are you mean. Just call me Eileen.

How do you feel?


Why doesn’t UK friend tell you her age?
Maybe he feels his privacy

Maybe when we know someone's age we'll know how to behave with that person

Greek woman (his wife) : What? Stop it.
Brazilian man : I won’t. Why?

How do you feel?


I get annoyed, because they paying attention of the people around them and make the
awkward situation when people start whispering.
What is going on between the man and his wife?
Maybe he just get betrayed by his wife.
Maybe his wife just took his coffee without permission.
Maybe his wife talked to another man and he got jealous.

What does a fast answer or a high-pitched voice mean in your culture?


Maybe when people get angry with you.

I feel offended cause why she looks away and doesn't answer.

I feel touched. I would thank them for their hospitality, Even i might not be able to
drink them cause i’m not allowed to do that.

Maybe it was their behaviour to drink wine after/before dinner

European woman : (looks at you and then walks away quickly)

A little bit depressed.

Why does the European woman not reply?


Maybe she thinks i am a weird person
Maybe she thinks i am playing around with her
Maybe she is such in rush.

What does your greeting mean?


Maybe to get her attention
Maybe she looks like her in a middle age
Maybe trying not confuse people around me.
i. Letters
An English-speaking student is staying in your house for six weeks on an exchange
program. Some letters arrive for her while she is at school. You open and read them.
When she comes home, she notices the opened letters, and she starts shouting at you.

At first I will be shocked, and then I will feel guilty

I will feel awkward and embarrassed
